Yesterday, we spoke about finding a peace that goes beyond our own understanding. Today’s reading gives us the simple, profound instruction on how to find it. From the book of Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Let’s sit with that for a moment. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." This is probably one of the most well-known verses... and one of the hardest to live. The two halves of this sentence are connected. You can’t do one without the other. You can't fully trust God while still relying completely on your own logic.

Our minds are wired to solve, to plan, to predict. We build spreadsheets and to-do lists. We try to map out every possibility to protect ourselves from uncertainty. And that’s a good thing, most of the time. But this verse points to a limit. It acknowledges there will be moments when your map runs out. When your logic fails. When the situation is bigger than your ability to understand it.

And in that moment, you have a choice. You can double down on your own efforts, spinning with anxiety, trying to force a solution that isn't there. We've all done that. Or... you can lean back. You can release your white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel. Here's what that means for your day ahead: A difficult conversation is looming. A project deadline feels impossible.

A relationship is strained and you don't know why. Your understanding is not enough. And that is okay. The invitation today is to stop leaning on what you know, and start trusting Who you know. It’s a conscious release. A quiet prayer in your heart that says, "I don't see the way, so I will trust the one who does." Then comes the second part.

The practice. "In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." This moves from the internal posture of trust to the external practice of it. "In all your ways." That's so beautifully comprehensive. It’s not just for the big, life-altering decisions. It’s for the email you’re about to write. The phone call you’re about to make.

The way you navigate traffic on your commute. To "acknowledge him" isn't about making a grand public display. It's a simple, quiet turn of your attention. It's a mental nod. A silent, "God, be in this moment with me." It's inviting His presence into the mundane, ordinary parts of your life. Here's what that means for your day: You have dozens of opportunities coming.

Before you walk into that meeting, you can acknowledge him. While you wait for the coffee to brew, you can acknowledge him. When you feel that flash of irritation with a coworker or a family member, you can acknowledge him. And the promise that follows is not that the path will be easy. It’s not that it will be free of stones or steep climbs.

The promise is that He will make it straight. A straight path is the most efficient way between two points. It’s a path with purpose. It’s a path that leads somewhere, not a crooked road that leads to a dead end. When you acknowledge God in the small things, He directs your steps. He lines them up. He makes sure that even the confusing detours are part of a path that is ultimately heading in the right direction.

Today, you will be tempted to rely on your own strength and your own map. It’s our default setting. But the invitation is to try a different way. It’s the difference between staring at a problem and looking up to the one who has the solution. It’s the difference between anxiety and surrender. The world wants you to have a five-year plan. God is asking for your next five minutes.

Trust him with your heart. Acknowledge him in your ways. He will handle the rest.
