Morning Verses: Strength & Courage for Your Day

Yesterday, we spoke of finding peace in quiet waters. Today, let’s turn our hearts toward finding strength for the journey ahead. Let the word of God settle into your morning. From the book of Joshua, chapter one, verse nine. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This verse is not a gentle suggestion. It’s a command, spoken by God to Joshua at a moment of profound change and uncertainty.

Moses, the great leader, is gone. And now Joshua must lead an entire nation into a land of giants and fortified cities. He had every reason to be afraid. He had every reason to be discouraged. And maybe you feel that way this morning. The task ahead of you feels too big. The change is too uncertain. The conversation you need to have is too difficult. You feel the weight of what’s next, and your own strength feels... small. Here's what this verse means for you, right now, in that feeling.

God’s command to "be strong and courageous" is not an expectation for you to manufacture bravery out of thin air. It is an invitation to draw on His. Notice the structure. The command comes first, but the power comes second. It’s the reason that makes the command possible: "FOR the Lord your God will be with you." Your courage for today does not depend on your feelings. It depends on His presence. Here's what that means if you're facing a difficult meeting. When you walk into that room, you are not walking in alone.

The presence of God, the creator of the universe, is with you. That doesn't mean the meeting will be easy. But it does mean you have access to a wisdom, a peace, and a strength that is not your own. Your job isn't to be the smartest or most persuasive person in the room. Your job is to remember who is in the room with you. Here's what that means if you're battling discouragement. The verse makes a distinction. It says, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Fear is often a sharp, sudden event—a bad report from the doctor, an unexpected bill, a sudden conflict.

Discouragement is different. It's a slow leak. It’s the weariness that settles in after days or weeks of things just being hard. It’s the voice that whispers, "it's never going to get any better." God's promise addresses both. His presence gives you courage for the sudden moment of fear. But it also gives you endurance against the slow drain of discouragement. The promise is that He is with you "wherever you go." That includes the long, monotonous, and difficult stretches of the road.

He is with you when you feel you are making no progress at all. His presence is the quiet, constant renewal of your hope, drip by drip. So as you step into this day, hold onto that second half of the verse. Let it be the anchor for your soul. The world tells you to find strength within yourself. To dig deep. God says, look beside you. I am here. Your strength for today is not a feeling you have to work up. It’s a fact you get to lean on. The fact of His presence. So when fear whispers, answer it with this truth.

When discouragement begins to settle, remind your heart of this promise. You are not being asked to face today alone. Your courage is not measured by the absence of fear. It is measured by your remembrance of who walks with you, right into it.
