The Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue was gifted to San Francisco in 1970. Last week, we listened for secrets on a deserted Alcatraz, but tonight, the magic is found not in a place of endings, but in a place of constant beginning. Leo sweeps the floor of the bakery, the scent of almond and sesame clinging to the air. Outside, the fog has rolled in thick, swallowing the tops of the buildings on Waverly Place. It’s almost midnight. The only light comes from the strings of red paper lanterns, their glow softened into a hazy watercolor wash.
He pulls out his phone. One bar. Enough. He dials. His grandmother picks up on the fourth ring, her voice thin as rice paper. They talk about the weather, about a neighbor's cat. Then, a silence stretches. "And who is this again, dear?" she asks. The question lands like a stone. "It's Leo, Popo." He says it gently, but his own voice sounds strange in the empty shop. He hangs up a few minutes later, the weight of her forgetting pressing down on him. He steps outside into the alley, the damp air cold on his face.
He looks up at the swaying lanterns, each one a small, sleeping sun. And without thinking, he whispers it to them. "Please," he says to the closest one, its tassels dancing in the breeze. "Just… let her remember." For a moment, nothing. The city hums its usual low-frequency song. But then… one lantern directly above him begins to pulse. Not with electricity, but with something WARMER. It brightens from a soft red to a brilliant, liquid gold. Leo just stares, his breath caught in his throat. The light isn't just in the lantern; it IS the lantern.
And then, from the delicate paper shell, a single, shimmering thread of gold detaches itself. It floats down, followed by another, and another, until a slow, silent river of light is drifting through the air. They aren't sparks. They look like… like memories woven from light. The stream swirls around him once, a touch as gentle as a moth's wing, before drifting north, over the rooftops, in the direction of his grandmother's apartment. The lantern fades back to its normal, gentle red. Leo stands there for a long time, the alley now seeming anything but empty.
The next morning, he brings her a warm pineapple bun. She opens the door, and her eyes are clear. "Leo," she says, her voice stronger than it was the night before. "I was just thinking about the day we flew that dragon kite in Portsmouth Square. You were SO small." He doesn't know if it was the lantern. He doesn't know if the magic was real. But as he walks back to the bakery, he looks up at the hundreds of lanterns hanging over the street. They aren't just decorations. They are a quiet, watchful ecosystem, breathing in the city’s worries and breathing out its hopes.
They are the keepers of small wishes in a city built on impossible dreams.
