Get this—a single gram of DNA, which is about the weight of a paperclip, can hold 215 PETABYTES of information. That's every movie ever made. Every song ever recorded. Every book ever written. Stored in something you can't even see. And last week, on our journey from black holes to the building blocks of life, we promised to zoom in on that DNA molecule. I had no idea we were talking about the universe's ultimate hard drive. It's the best hard drive, and it's also the oldest. It's the code that writes every living thing, from a redwood tree to you and me. Okay, let's start there. "Code." We throw that word around a lot.
What does it actually mean? Is it like computer code? That's a perfect way to think about it. But instead of ones and zeros, DNA uses a four-letter alphabet: A, T, C, and G. Wait, that's it? Just four letters? For everything? For my hair, my eyes, the fact I hate cilantro? That's the beautiful part. It’s not about the letters themselves, but the order they're in. It’s like a recipe book. The entire book is your genome. One chapter might be the recipe for "eye color." Another chapter is the recipe for "making a heart." So a gene is just... a single recipe? Exactly! So if you know one side of the ladder—if you see an 'A'—you automatically know the other side has to be a 'T'? You've got it! And that’s the secret to life. Because the ladder can unzip right down the middle, splitting the rungs apart. Then, each half can rebuild its missing side, using that A-T, C-G rule. Whoa. So you get two perfect copies from one original. It’s a self-copying recipe book! It’s the most brilliant copying machine ever created.
It allows life to be stable. You pass on your recipes, your genes, with incredible accuracy. But—and this is the key—it’s not perfect. It makes mistakes? Like typos in the recipe? Exactly! A tiny typo. Maybe a 'G' shows up where a 'C' should be. Most of the time, these typos don't matter. But sometimes... sometimes a typo changes the recipe. And a changed recipe means you get something new. You get something new. You get variation. That's how you get blue eyes and brown eyes. It’s how a wolf, over millions of years, can become a chihuahua. The stability of the code lets life continue, but the tiny imperfections let it evolve.
So this one molecule has a built-in system for both staying the same and for changing. That is... that's unbelievably elegant. It’s a code that writes itself, copies itself, and edits itself. All day, every day, in trillions of cells inside you right now. It's the language we're all written in.
