The security guard’s footsteps clicked on the marble floor at exactly eleven-oh-three P.M. Last week, we left two strangers sorting their secrets along with their laundry. This week, the meeting is quieter, the room much larger. But the secrets are just as present. The gallery was a canyon of shadows and soft light. Leo stood before a painting titled "Coastal Squall, 1958." He shouldn't be here. The museum had closed hours ago.
He'd hidden in a restroom, a foolish, impulsive decision, just to have a few moments of silence with the art. But now, the silence was too big. It had weight. It pressed in. That's when he heard it. Not the guard's steady patrol. Something else. A soft scrape of a shoe, just out of sight, behind a large marble pillar. He froze. His heart hammered against his ribs. A thief? Another person trapped like him? A woman stepped out from behind the marble.
She was small, dressed in dark, simple clothes. She didn’t look at him. Her eyes were fixed on the same painting. "It's wrong, you know," she said. Her voice was calm, barely a whisper, but it carried in the cavernous room. "I... I'm sorry?" Leo stammered. "The title," she clarified, still not looking at him. "Coastal Squall. The artist hated that name. The gallery owner insisted. Said it sounded more dramatic. More sellable." She finally turned to him.
Her eyes were dark and serious. "She called it 'The Waiting Sea'." Leo didn't know what to say. He was trespassing. He was talking to a woman who was also trespassing. And she was correcting the history of a fifty-year-old painting. "How do you know that?" he asked. She gave a small, sad smile. She walked right up to the canvas, closer than the velvet ropes ever allowed. She pointed to a patch of dark, churning water in the bottom right corner.
"Because she told me. And because her real signature isn't here." Then, the moment changed. The air shifted. She reached into the pocket of her worn jacket. It wasn't a weapon. It wasn't a phone. It was a single, impossibly fine-tipped brush. From another pocket, a tiny glass vial, no bigger than her thumb, filled with a dark blue pigment. "Every painting she ever made," the woman whispered, her voice thick with emotion, "has a tiny blue starling hidden in it.
Her mark. She fell ill before she could finish this one." She uncapped the vial. The faint, sharp smell of linseed oil cut through the sterile air. Leo stood frozen, a witness to a crime that felt more like a prayer. He didn't move to stop her. He didn't make a sound. He just watched as she leaned in, her hand steady, the brush poised over the dark waves of a waiting sea.
