The average human reads about two hundred and fifty words per minute. Last week, we saw how a secret hidden in a gallery could be exposed in the space of a single glance. But some secrets aren't meant to be read at ALL. The bookstore was called The Last Word. Dust motes danced in the slanted afternoon light, catching on the spines of forgotten histories and unread futures. I was in the fiction aisle, pretending to look for something specific, when I saw her.
She was in the poetry section. And she wasn't browsing. She was… working. With a quiet, unnerving focus. She’d pull a slim volume of Plath from the shelf, hold it in both hands like a wounded bird, and then slide it back. But not in the same spot. She’d move it one book to the left. Then she’d take a Dickinson, and swap it with a Frost. Her fingers barely made a sound against the paper. It wasn’t alphabetical. It wasn’t by publisher.
It was a pattern known only to her. I watched for twenty minutes. My own book lay forgotten in my hands. Who WAS she? An employee? No uniform, no name tag. A customer? Maybe. A ghost? Almost. Her focus was so complete, the rest of the world had faded away. There was only her, and the books, and the story she was telling without a single word. I felt like an intruder on something sacred. Something private that was happening in a very public space.
And then, she stopped. She took one step back, her head tilted, surveying her work. The shelf was a mosaic of her private grief, or her hidden joy, I couldn't tell which. A single tear escaped and traced a path down her cheek. She didn’t wipe it. She just let it fall. Then, she turned, and walked out of the store, the little bell over the door barely whispering her exit. I waited. One minute. Two. The silence in the store felt different now.
Heavier. I walked over to the poetry section. The books sat there, perfectly aligned in their new, secret order. I reached out a hand, wanting to understand. Wanting to pull one out, to find the note I was SURE was tucked inside. To read the secret. But I stopped. My hand fell back to my side. This wasn't my story to read. It was a message left in a bottle, set adrift on a shelf of paper and ink, meant for an audience of one.
Or maybe… for no one at all. It reminded me of something else. That feeling you get at a big family dinner, when you see an empty chair, and no one says a name. You don't know the story. You don't need to. You just feel the shape of what’s missing. Some secrets aren't puzzles to be solved. They're memorials, to be honored in the quiet. I left the books exactly as she’d arranged them, a silent testament in a silent room.
