The St. Jude’s Head lighthouse was built over a shipwreck. One hundred and twelve souls lost in a single night in 1888. Last week, Admin, a secret was held in the silver of an old photograph. This week, it’s buried in stone and salt. The visitor arrived on a Tuesday in November. Wind sharp enough to cut glass. Her name was Lena, and she was the only one on the tour. Because there WAS no tour. Not in the off-season. The keeper’s name was Elias.
He had a face carved from driftwood and eyes the color of a winter sea. He watched her climb the gravel path from the parking lot, her coat pulled tight against the wind. He didn’t smile when he opened the heavy oak door. "Here for the view?" he asked. His voice was gravel. Lena shook her head. Her gaze wasn't on the spiral staircase or the massive Fresnel lens visible stories above. It was on a row of leather-bound logbooks on a low shelf.
"I'm interested in your records," she said. Elias stood with his arms crossed. A mountain in a worn wool sweater. Lena ran a gloved finger along the spines of the books. "Nineteen fifty-six," she said. "The winter of fifty-six. I can't seem to find the log for it." A flicker in Elias’s eyes. So fast you’d miss it if you weren’t looking. "Water damage," he said. The words were flat. Final. "Storm took out the lower windows that year. Lost a few." Lena didn't look disappointed.
She looked… expectant. As if that was the answer she knew she would get. "Was that the year Keeper Monroe was here?" The silence in the room deepened. Now, the only sound was the wind howling around the stone tower. Elias didn’t answer. He just watched her. His stillness was an answer in itself. Then, Lena reached into her bag. She didn’t pull out a phone or a camera. She pulled out a small, worn book. A diary, bound in dark red leather, the corners soft with age.
"This was my grandmother's," she said, her voice quiet but clear. "She was Eleanor Monroe." She didn’t open it. She just held it. A key. A weapon. Elias’s gaze dropped to the diary, then back to her face. The air grew thick. Heavy. He knew. He ABSOLUTELY knew. He finally spoke. "Some things," he said, his voice low, "are best left with the sea." He turned, without another word, and began his slow, steady climb up the iron stairs toward the lantern.
Lena stayed below, alone in the circular room. She heard his footsteps fade, one measured tread at a time. She hadn't found the story. She had found its guardian. Outside, the fog began to roll in, swallowing the cliffs whole. And the great horn sounded its deep, mournful note across the water. A warning.
