The ferry horn blasted once, a low, gut-shaking sound that vibrated through the steel deck. Last week, we left the secrets of St. Jude’s Head buried beneath the cold stone of its lighthouse. But some secrets don’t stay buried. They travel. They find new shores. He stood at the railing, watching the mainland dissolve into the grey mist. Salt spray kissed his face. He’d been trying to memorize the feeling of it for ten minutes. The man, Elias, didn’t notice her until she was standing beside him, her own hands gripping the cold, damp metal.
She was small, wrapped in a dark blue coat, her face pale against the gloom. "It disappears fast, doesn't it?" she said. Her voice was low, calm. Elias just nodded, not taking his eyes off the churning water. "You're not dressed for the islands," she observed. He glanced down at his own clothes. A simple suit, no tie. The kind of thing you wear to an office you never want to see again. "Had to leave in a hurry," he said. It was the truth. Just not the whole truth. "I'm Clara," she offered. "Elias." They stood in silence for a moment, the only sounds the thrum of the engine and the cry of a distant gull.
"So what does a man in a suit do on the islands?" Clara asked, her tone light, but her eyes were… analytical. "Banking? Real estate?" "Clerk," he lied. The word felt foreign in his mouth. "Records." "Ah." She smiled, a small, knowing thing. "Lots of paper. I bet your hands get tired." He instinctively curled his fingers into his palm. He’d spent the last week scrubbing them, trying to erase the evidence of his real life. The callouses on his fingertips were almost gone. ALMOST. But she was looking right at them. "What about you?" he asked, trying to shift the focus.
"Me?" she said, turning to lean her back against the railing, facing him now. "I look for things. Things that are lost." A cold dread, sharp and familiar, pricked at his neck. He kept his face neutral. Blank. It was a skill he’d had to learn. "Like antiques?" "Sometimes," she said. Her gaze was unwavering. "Sometimes… people." The air grew thick. Heavy. The other passengers seemed miles away, ghostly figures in the fog. It was just the two of them, suspended between the land he’d fled and the island that was supposed to be his sanctuary.
He could feel his heart beating a frantic, panicked rhythm against his ribs. She took a small step closer. "It’s brave, what you’re doing. Starting over." He didn't breathe. She continued, her voice barely audible over the engine's drone. "It takes courage. Especially after what happened with the orchestra in Vienna." His blood went cold. Vienna. The word struck him like a physical blow. He hadn’t told ANYONE. The people who had arranged this trip… they had promised him total anonymity. A clean slate. He didn't flinch — he couldn't afford to — but something inside him shattered.
He finally met her eyes. The blank mask was gone. In its place was raw, unfiltered fear. He didn't ask her how she knew. He didn't have to. The only question that mattered was written all over his face. Who ARE you? Clara just held his gaze, her expression unreadable. The ferry plowed onward through the endless grey, carrying a secret that was no longer his alone.
