He always paid in cash, with bills so crisp they seemed to have been printed that morning. It was our second time at this cafe. The first had felt like a coincidence, a welcome one. This time, it felt like an appointment we’d both silently agreed to keep. He sat across from me, the same easy smile, the same way of listening that made you feel like you were the only person in the world.

We talked for an hour. About my work, about a film he’d seen. The conversation flowed, but underneath it, I felt that same hum of careful construction I’d noticed before. Every story he told felt polished, worn smooth from telling. He signaled for the check. And that’s when it happened. He pulled out a worn, brown leather wallet. The kind of thing a person carries for a decade.

It was completely at odds with his perfect shoes and his pressed shirt. He opened it, and from my angle, I could see the slots for cards. Tucked behind his driver’s license was another ID card, laminated and slightly yellowed with age. An old university ID. The picture was of him—unmistakably him, but younger. Maybe twenty-one, twenty-two. His hair was longer, and he wasn't smiling.

But that wasn’t the detail that made my breath catch. It was the name. Printed in bold, block letters right under the photo. The first name wasn’t Elias. It was Thomas. He pulled out a twenty, placed it on the tray, and snapped the wallet shut. The whole thing took maybe three seconds. A flash of a life that wasn't the one he was presenting. My mind was racing. Do I say something?

Do I pretend I didn’t see? I looked from the wallet, now back in his pocket, to his face. He was watching me. And he was smiling that same, placid smile. "You're old school," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "Always cash." He leaned back in his chair, the smile never wavering. "Habit," he said. "Some things are better kept offline." His answer was smooth. Too smooth. It wasn't an answer to my question.

It was an answer to the one I hadn't dared to ask. We sat for another minute in silence. The warmth of the cafe suddenly felt artificial. He stood up, nodding a gentle goodbye. "Until next time," he said. And then he was gone. I stayed there, staring at the empty chair. Elias. Thomas. The names circled in my head. I looked down at the table. He’d left the change. A few coins, and one of those impossibly crisp bills, sitting right next to my cup.

It felt less like a payment, and more like a calling card left behind.
