Elias stared at blueprint 7B, the one detailing the sub-basement. One hundred and twelve deep-bored piles would anchor this building to the bedrock, a testament to permanence. He’d designed every inch of it to be his masterpiece. His redemption. The air in the studio was still, thick with the smell of paper and graphite, the only sound the low hum of the server bank in the corner. He was tracing a line with his finger—a service corridor that snaked around the core—when her voice cut through the silence. “It’s a maze.” He looked up.
Lena stood by the edge of the drafting table, her shadow falling across the plans. She was the artist commissioned for the lobby, a last-minute addition by the client. He hadn’t wanted her here, not this late. “It’s a utility passage,” he said, his voice flat. “No,” she said, stepping closer. She didn’t look at him, only at the drawing. “Look at the flow. The sightlines are all broken. These hallways… they don’t lead anywhere. They just… stop.” She pointed to a section near the western stairwell. “Why would you design a dead end here?
It’s inefficient. It’s almost… punitive.” Elias felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. Punitive. The word hung in the air. He’d spent a decade building a new name, a new life. Elias Thorne, the celebrated architect. Not the other man. Not the one from the Blackwood fire. He’d told himself this design was about light, about openness. But she saw something else. “It’s a style choice. It creates moments of… quiet contemplation.” Lena finally met his eyes. There was no accusation in them. Just a deep, unnerving curiosity. “Contemplation… or containment?” she asked softly.
Her gaze was so direct it felt like a physical touch. He felt the sudden, irrational urge to roll up the blueprints, to hide them. To hide himself. She reached into her worn leather bag and pulled out not a sketchbook, but a small, faded newspaper clipping. She didn't hand it to him. She just placed it on the table, next to the flawed corridor on blueprint 7B. The headline was blurred, but the photograph was clear. A building, gutted by fire. A dark skeleton against a gray sky. “I was a child when the Blackwood burned,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
“I remember the smoke. And I remember the stories they told afterward. About the hallways that went nowhere.” Elias didn’t speak. He couldn’t. He just stared at the clipping, then at his own design. The lines on the paper seemed to shift, to rearrange themselves. The clean, modern angles of his new building twisted into the scorched, skeletal frame from the photograph. The service corridor he’d drawn wasn’t a passage. It was a scar. He wasn’t designing a skyscraper. He was rebuilding a ghost. Lena picked up the clipping, her movements slow and deliberate.
“You build beautiful cages, Elias.” “I just wonder who you’re trying to keep locked inside.”
