The salt had etched the windows of the cafe completely opaque. Last week's story unfolded on the Trans-Siberian Express, a secret passed between strangers on a moving train. This week, the train has stopped. We are in a town so still you can hear the gulls breathing. It was October, in a place that only truly exists in July. The man, Elias, was sketching the harbor he couldn't see. He was drawing it from memory. He was good at remembering things. The only other person in the cafe was a woman, staring into a cup of tea she hadn't touched.

The steam had long since vanished. Her stillness was… loud. Elias put his pencil down. "Quiet, isn't it?" he said. The woman looked up. Her eyes were the color of the winter sea. "That's the point, I suppose." "Are you here for the quiet?" Elias asked. A simple question. She gave a small, tight smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Something like that." He noticed she’d paid for a full pot of tea with a crumpled bill, but only asked the girl for hot water. He noticed her coat was too thin for the wind whipping off the water.

And he noticed her gaze kept flicking to the ferry schedule tacked to the wall. The last boat left at six. It was four-thirty. "Catching the ferry?" he tried again. "No," she said. A little too quick. "I'm staying." But her whole body was coiled, ready to spring. A runner, waiting for the gun. Elias felt a familiar curiosity, the one that made him a good journalist and a lonely man. He asked where she was from. She named a town a hundred miles north. But he heard it. A faint, almost invisible accent underneath her words.

Something older. Something not from here at all. He was right. He was also, in ways he didn't yet understand, completely wrong. The cafe door flew open. A bell chimed violently against the wood. It was just the wind. But the woman didn't startle. She reacted. A sharp, full-body flinch, her hand diving into her coat pocket, gripping something hard. Her eyes—wide with a terror too big for the room—were fixed on the empty doorway. For one, long second, the air crackled. She wasn't just nervous.

She was hunted. The door swung shut. The moment evaporated. She slowly, so slowly, relaxed her hand. But it stayed on her coat, a silent guard. Elias picked up his pencil. He didn't look at his drawing of the harbor. He turned to a fresh page. He began to sketch her face from memory, trying to capture the shape of her fear. He knew, with a sudden, chilling certainty, that she wasn't running to the quiet. She was using it as a place to hide. The charcoal whispered across the paper, tracing the outline of a secret he could feel, but couldn't see.
