The Trans-Siberian Railway crosses eight different time zones on its journey. Last week we watched a secret unravel on a canvas, a truth hidden in plain sight. This week, the canvas is over nine thousand kilometers wide, and the secret is rattling along inside a second-class carriage. The air smells of coal dust and weak tea. A man who calls himself Arthur Finch is pretending to read a worn paperback. He looks like a retired teacher, maybe.
Plausible. Unremarkable. Across from him, a young woman named Elara is sketching the blurred landscape in a notebook. The train rocks, a steady, hypnotic rhythm. But something is wrong. Elara notices it first in his hands. They're resting on the book, and they don't match the rest of him. His clothes are worn, his shoes scuffed, but his hands are immaculate. The hands of a surgeon, or a musician. Not a man in a fraying tweed jacket.
He catches her looking and curls them into fists, tucking them away. A small, defensive gesture. Later, in the dining car, he orders his meal. His Russian is polite, but stilted. Textbook. Then, when the waiter drops a fork, he mutters an apology in a dialect of Italian she’s only ever heard in recordings… something from the fourteenth century. He freezes, a flicker of panic in his eyes, before covering it with a cough.
He claims he travels a lot for his "import-export" business. The lie is smooth, but it lays on top of the silence like a film of oil on water. Elara just nods. She goes back to her food. But she’s not watching the landscape anymore. She’s watching him. She’s watching the way his gaze drifts to the horizon, not with the boredom of a weary traveler, but with the haunted look of a man running from something. Or toward it.
The turn comes in the middle of the night. A jolt wakes them both as the train takes a hard siding. A heavy briefcase by Finch's feet slides open. He lunges for it, but not before a single sheet of thick, yellowed paper glides out and lands near Elara’s foot. It isn't paper. It’s vellum. And the script isn't typed, or even handwritten in a modern way. The ink is faded brown, the letters are angular, alien. It looks… ancient.
He snatches it, his face pale in the dim emergency light. He doesn't say a word. He just shoves it back into the case and snaps it shut. He looks at her. She looks back. The train begins to move again. The rhythm returns. But the space between them is now charged with a new reality. He isn't Mr. Finch, the tourist. He is a curator of something impossible. A ghost, carrying a piece of history that was supposed to stay buried.
Elara picks up her pencil, but she doesn't sketch the landscape. She turns to a fresh page. And under the dim cabin light, she begins to draw a map of a country that no longer exists.
