The light from the Andromeda galaxy has been traveling for two and a half million years to reach your eye. Last night, we spoke of quiet realms beyond the reach of daylight… tonight, we are going to one. We're going to the Cinder Peak Observatory, a place the world has mostly forgotten. The road that leads there hasn't been paved in fifty years. It ends at a small, silver dome that sits on the mountain like a single, dropped pearl.

Inside, it smells of cold metal, old paper, and the faint, clean scent of ozone from the aging electronics. This is Elias’s world. Every night, he climbs the spiral staircase, and with the push of a worn brass button, the dome groans open to the sky. A slice of the infinite, just for him. Elias is a listener, more than a watcher. He knows the observatory by its sounds.

The low, steady hum of the clock drive, a tiny motor that turns the massive telescope to counteract the spin of the Earth. The whisper of high-altitude wind finding the one loose seal on the dome’s shutter. The soft creak of the floorboards as the old building settles in the cold. He’s been trying, for years, to hear past all of it. To find the sound of the stars themselves.

Not the radio waves that other, newer observatories hunt for. No. He’s listening for the feeling of the silence. That profound quiet that must exist between the galaxies. A quiet that promises you are truly, finally, alone with the universe. But he never quite finds it. There is always the sound of his own heart, a stubborn, rhythmic drumming. There is always the sound of his own breath, fogging the eyepiece.

A constant reminder of the small, warm machine he lives inside. Tonight, he guides the telescope towards the Orion Nebula. A familiar, comforting sight. A stellar nursery, where gas and dust are collapsing into new suns. He leans in, adjusts the fine focus, and holds his breath. The view swims into clarity—a soft, ghostly cloud of pink and blue. And then he hears it.

A sound that doesn't belong. A tiny… tap. Tap-tap-tap. It’s not the drive, it’s not the wind. It’s delicate. And it’s close. It’s coming from the eyepiece he’s pressed against. Elias pulls back slowly. He squints in the dim red light of the control panel. And he sees it. A luna moth, its wings the color of pale jade, is clinging to the eyepiece. It’s beating its fragile wings against the cold metal, drawn to the faint glimmer of starlight leaking from the lens.

It thought it had found the moon. Elias reaches for the switch and turns off the clock drive. The low hum ceases, and a deeper silence fills the dome. He doesn’t look through the telescope again. The nebula can wait. He wasn't alone up here after all. He had a visitor, another creature of the night, just as drawn to the light as he was. The vast, empty distance he’d been searching for suddenly felt… less empty.

Less distant. He just sits, watching the moth, its silhouette a living, breathing shadow against the river of starlight pouring in from the sky.
