The barge is seventy feet long, and just seven feet wide. From the high, cold perch of the Cinder Peak Observatory we visited last time, the stars felt impossibly far away.

Down here on the water, they seem close enough to touch. The slow, steady thrum of the engine is a heartbeat you feel more in your bones than you hear with your ears.

A thick wool blanket is pulled up to my chin, and the night air is cool and smells of damp earth and the faint, sweet scent of clover from the fields we are leaving behind.

The water whispers against the steel hull. It’s not a sound of hurry, but of quiet persistence. A constant, liquid sigh. We move at a walking pace, slower than a person could stroll along the towpath beside us.

But no one is on the towpath. There is only us, and the night. The moon is a little more than half-full, and it lays a shimmering, silver road on the black surface of the canal.

The path breaks and re-forms with every tiny ripple. A barn owl calls from a stand of skeletal ash trees, a long, hunting shriek that cuts the silence for a moment, then leaves it deeper than before.

We pass a lock keeper’s cottage, dark and asleep, its windows like vacant eyes. A single rose bush climbs the wall, its pale flowers glowing faintly in the moonlight.

There’s a sense that the whole world is holding its breath. We are gliding through a landscape that is dreaming. The gentle rocking of the barge is a cradle… a slow, patient rhythm.

Then, the banks on either side begin to rise. We’re entering a cutting, a deep channel carved through a low hill. The moonlight vanishes. The sky becomes a narrow ribbon of stars far above.

And then even that is gone as we slide under a low, stone bridge. It’s suddenly pitch black. The engine’s thrum seems louder, echoing off the unseen stone. You can hear water dripping, each drop a distinct, round sound hitting the canal.

For ten seconds, the world is only sound, and the feeling of slow, forward motion in absolute darkness. And then we emerge. The moonlight floods back, and the world feels new.

Washed clean. The air is colder here, in the shadow of the hill. A heron, disturbed by our passing, lifts from the reeds with a slow, powerful beat of its enormous wings, a prehistoric shape against the paling sky.

Because now, to the east, the black has softened to a deep, deep indigo. It isn’t dawn yet… but it’s the promise of dawn. The barge slips onward, a dark line moving through the first silver mists that are beginning to rise from the water’s surface.
