The porcelain bird had been in seven pieces. Last night we talked about worlds under glass, those tiny, perfect universes. Tonight, we find another one, here on this quiet workbench. It’s a world that needs putting back together. The only light in the room comes from a single, low-wattage lamp, casting a warm, honey-colored circle on a surface of old, scarred wood. Within this circle of light sits the Mender. Their face is lost in the gentle shadow just beyond the glow, but their hands… their hands are the whole story.

Long, patient fingers move with a slowness that feels like a form of meditation. On a small velvet cloth, the seven pieces of the bird are laid out like a sad puzzle. A shard of sky-blue wing. The delicate curve of a breast, its glaze crazed with a thousand tiny lines. The head, with one eye still bright and black, the other lost to the break. The Mender picks up the largest piece—the body—and holds it in the light. Turning it over and over. Learning its history from its wounds.

There is no rush here. Time is measured in the slow setting of adhesive, in the patient breath held while two edges meet. A tiny brush, no thicker than a whisker, applies a nearly invisible line of glue along a fractured edge. The Mender then picks up a corresponding piece of wing. There’s a moment of absolute stillness… a hesitation… and then a soft, dry click as porcelain meets porcelain. The fit is perfect. The hands hold it. They just… hold. Waiting for the bond to become memory.

This is the work. Not forcing, but coaxing. Not hiding the breaks, but honoring them with a repair so fine it becomes a part of the object’s new life. Each piece is a small victory against forgetting. Now, only one piece remains. The tiny sliver of tail feather that had skittered under the workbench weeks ago. The Mender’s fingers find it, a final piece of the story. It is placed with the same quiet reverence as all the others. A faint line of gold dust, finer than pollen, is brushed into the seams.

Not to hide them, but to trace the journey back to wholeness. The Mender sets the bird down in the center of the lamplight. It is whole. The cracks are now just faint, golden veins. It looks as if it might draw a breath, puff out its small chest, and fill the silent room with a song. The light holds it, a small, blue, and perfect thing, rescued from the dark.
