The oldest known living tree, a bristlecone pine named Methuselah, is four thousand, eight hundred and fifty-five years old. Last time, we spoke of the Night Loom, weaving stories from stillness. That tree has been weaving its own story, in rings of wood, for nearly five millennia. But stories aren't just in looms or trees. Sometimes they're just waiting… in the dust. The attic door sighed open. A single column of sunlight cut through the gloom, a spotlight on a stage of dust.

The air was thick with the scent of forgotten things—cedar, brittle paper, time itself. Every surface wore a soft grey blanket. Motes danced in the light, a silent, slow-motion blizzard. And there, on a trunk just at the edge of the sunbeam, was a small, dark shape. I moved closer, my footsteps muffled. It was a bird. Carved from a single piece of dark wood, no bigger than my thumb. It wasn’t dusty like everything else.

It was clean, smooth, as if someone had just set it down. The wings were half-unfurled, the head cocked, listening. I picked it up. The wood was cool and impossibly dense. No maker's mark. Just this perfect, tiny, silent creature. I sat on the floor in the shaft of light, and held it in my palm. The house was quiet. Not empty, but full. The hum of the refrigerator two floors below. The distant whisper of traffic. The creak of the house settling.

I turned the bird over and over. Why was it here? And why so… clean? It felt like a question left not for me, but for anyone. The light began to change, shifting from gold to a soft, rosy orange. The dust motes glowed. Time itself seemed to stretch, each second a long, sweet note. I held the bird up into the light. And that’s when it happened. For just a moment, as the light passed through the delicate space between its wing and its body… it didn’t cast a shadow on the wall.

It cast a constellation. A spray of tiny, sharp pinpricks of light. Not a real one from any map I knew. It was new. A secret one. It glittered there for a breath… and then the angle of the sun shifted, and it was gone. Just a simple shadow once more. I didn't try to make it happen again. It felt wrong to demand an encore. I just sat there, holding the little bird, as the light faded and the attic filled with the deep blue of twilight.

The mystery wasn't solved. I didn't know who carved it, or how the trick of the light worked. And I found I didn't need to. Some things aren't for understanding. They're just for finding. I placed the bird back on the trunk, right where I found it. The attic wasn't a place for storage anymore. It was a place where a secret sky could appear on a dusty wall. Walking back down the stairs, the house felt different. Not older, but deeper.

As if it had just whispered one of its stories.
