On the night of November ninth, 1989, the men with the guns had no orders. In our last episode, we talked about history’s hidden witnesses. Tonight, you ARE one. You’re twenty years old. Your name is Erich. And the world is about to end. It started as a murmur. A rumor carried on the West German television signals we weren’t supposed to watch. Something about travel restrictions being lifted. Immediately. We laughed. A mistake. Some party official misspoke.

But then the calls started. First one, then another. My mother, her voice tight with a hope she didn’t dare name. “Is it true, Erich?” I told her it was nonsense. I told her to go to bed. Then the people came. Not a mob. Not at first. Just a few dozen, then a hundred. Their faces pale under the sodium lights of the Bornholmer Strasse checkpoint. They weren't shouting. They were just… watching us. Waiting. My lieutenant, Harald, was on the phone, screaming into the receiver.

But the line was a mess of static and panicked, contradictory voices from district command. The system had a protocol for everything. For riots, for escape attempts, for war. It had no protocol for this. For thousands of citizens showing up, asking politely to be let through. I gripped my rifle. The cold of the stock seeped into my hand. My mind went to the training films. To the ghosts. Günther Litfin. That was the name they drilled into us.

The first one. Shot trying to swim the Spree river back in ‘61. His story was a footnote meant to keep us in line. A reminder of what this wall COST. And my job was to be the full stop at the end of that sentence. The crowd swelled. It wasn't a hundred people anymore. It was thousands. A sea of wool coats and anxious breath, fogging the air. They started to chant. A low rumble that grew into a demand. “Tor auf! Tor auf!” Open the gate. My heart was a hammer against my ribs.

We were twenty men against a city. Against history itself. Harald slammed the phone down. His face was white. He looked at me. He looked at the crowd pressing against the barrier, the metal groaning. There were no orders coming. There was only us, and them. He gave a sharp nod. Not an order. An abdication. I unlatched the first bolt. The sound was deafening in the sudden quiet. A single, metallic crack. Then I pushed. The barrier swung open.

For a second, nobody moved. They just stared. Disbelieving. Then one old man with tears streaming down his face took a single, hesitant step. Then another. And then the dam broke. They flooded past me. A torrent of humanity. They weren't enemies. They were just… people. A woman stopped and pressed a flower into my hand. Someone patted my shoulder, shouting “Thank you!” I saw a young woman run into the arms of an old man who had stumbled through from the other side.

He held her like he was afraid she might dissolve. He was sobbing. She was saying something, over and over. It sounded like something I read once, from another woman just like her. “I thought I had forgotten what my father’s hug felt like. My heart remembered before my mind did.” They flowed around me like a river around a stone. I stood my post. But the post was gone. I was a guard with nothing left to guard. The wall was just a line on a map now, being erased by a million footsteps.
