At seven-oh-three this morning, the world’s last remaining ‘E’ was captured in a butterfly net outside a bakery in Perth. Last week, we spoke of a world where gibberish reigns and logic combusts; we did not realize we were reporting from the future. The Great Vowel Vanishing is complete. What began as a whisper, a strange gap in a sentence, has become a global crisis of silence and clicks. They are calling it the Consonant Conspiracy. The first to go was ‘A’. One moment it was there, anchoring words like ‘apple’ and ‘catastrophe’. The next, it was simply… gone.

People trying to say ‘aardvark’ just made a sad, deflating sound, like a balloon giving up. . Then ‘U’ disappeared, followed by ‘I’, and then ‘O’. The world sounded like it was trying to clear its throat, permanently. Grnts. Shshshs. Thwps. Communication broke down. Treaties were violated by accident. Marriage proposals became indistinguishable from threats. Naturally, the authorities responded with calm, measured reason. Just kidding. They formed the Grand High Commission for the Re-Vocalization of Linguistic Structures. Or, the G.H.C.R.L.S.

Their first act was to declare all remaining consonants "persons of interest." Their second was to issue Emergency Phonetic Mandate 7-B. This was, you must understand, a masterstroke of bureaucratic genius. Vowels were not gone, the Mandate declared, they had simply been… reassigned. Henceforth, every instance of the letter ‘A’ was to be replaced by the sound of a single, respectful clap. . The letter ‘I’ was now the sound of a drawer full of silverware being gently shaken. . And the noble ‘O’? The sound of a wet sponge hitting a marble floor.

. So what does it all add up to? A new language, written in the ink of madness. A simple phrase like "I love you" became… . It was not romantic. It was… moist. This is a pattern we've seen before, of course. Faced with an inexplicable void, we don't just fill it. We over-fill it. We pour concrete into the Grand Canyon because the emptiness makes us nervous. We replace a missing nail with a complex system of pulleys and levers. The G.H.C.R.L.S. wasn't solving a problem; it was building a monument to its own confusion. The analogy breaks down, however, because the Red Scare never tried to replace the concept of freedom with the sound of a kazoo.

. The Commission’s top scientist, a Dr. Philemon Gorp, held a press conference yesterday. He stood before a wall of blinking, useless machines. He looked… tired. He held up a single piece of paper. On it was a complex diagram involving a hamster wheel, three lemons, and what appeared to be a diagram for a very sad trampoline. He cleared his throat. He looked at the assembled press. And he spoke the first words of our new global language. . Translation: "We believe they left on purpose." This week, then, sets up a new hunt. Not for the conspirators who stole our language.

But for the vowels themselves. We must now ask them, politely, to come back. We must convince them that words like ‘onomatopoeia’ are still worth the effort. The search begins now. And it will be conducted entirely in clicks, pops, and the sound of profound disappointment.
