Lot one on the block this morning: Jio Platforms pulled in bids for 69,763 crore rupees on day one, fully covering its massive book in just 100 minutes flat. In yesterday's episode, we looked at the build-up to Jio's blockbuster IPO; now the paddles are up, and institutional buyers just blew past every record in Indian market history. Quick note before we run the floor: this briefing is general information and our own view, not financial advice. Around the rest of the ring, capital is moving just as fast. Premji Invest, Norwest, and Lok Capital backed AI-driven lender Vegafin with a commitment of up to 1,000 crore rupees, funding its majority buyout of Gurugram-based Bizloan. Over in enterprise tech, IT giants TCS and Wipro started hunting mid-market corporate accounts to replace revenue as AI automation chips away at traditional Fortune 500 contracts.
Meanwhile, OpenAI signed an agreement with Karmayogi Bharat to deliver AI training modules to 1.7 crore registered Indian civil servants. Even consumer retail caught bids, with D2C menswear label The Pant Project locking in 109 crore rupees led by Mirae Asset Venture Investments to scale up to 150 physical stores. Now let us step back to the big board, because the real action is in who is holding the paper. Jio Platforms opened its 30,213 crore rupee issue at a price band of 1,065 to 1,119 rupees per share, and qualified institutional buyers ran the bid up to 9.42 times their quota on the very first day. Retail investors were more cautious at seventy-three percent subscribed, but total demand closed day one at 3.16 times the entire offering. That is 47,660 crore rupees more than the company asked for. I'm bid 1,065, now 1,119, do I hear 1,119 in the back?
Yep! Sold. Hammer's down. Now let me tell you what that actually was. Jio intends to route up to 27,500 crore rupees directly to repay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm, converting public market hype into a clean balance sheet before listing on October 28. And that appetite for corporate leverage is spilling into domestic banking. Thanks to the Reserve Bank of India easing acquisition-financing restrictions back in July, domestic lenders can now finance up to seventy-five percent of buyout values. State Bank of India and its peers have already financed about a dozen major takeover deals worth more than 10,000 crore rupees, attacking what bankers estimate is a 2 lakh crore rupee buyout pipeline. A price is just the last person who wanted it more. Between institutional cash flooding public order books and state lenders finally bankrolling private consolidations, corporate India is trading cautious conservatism for pure scale.
