The word ‘pencil’ comes from the Old French word ‘pincel’, meaning a small paintbrush. This is because the earliest pencils were, in fact, brushes made from camel hair. Last week, in our look at the surprising origins of everyday objects, we touched on how names and functions can drift over time. But the pencil… oh, the pencil is a masterclass in this. It’s an object so familiar we think we know it, but its entire history is built on a case of mistaken identity and a resource war fought over a lump of black rock. It all starts in the 1560s, in a valley called Borrowdale in Cumbria, England. A huge storm knocks over an old oak tree, and underneath its roots, local shepherds find a strange, dark, greasy substance.

It’s solid, unlike charcoal. It’s soft. It leaves a clean, dark mark on their hands, and more importantly, on their sheep. It was perfect for marking the flock. They called it ‘wadd’, or sometimes ‘plumbago’, from the Latin for lead ore, because they assumed it was a form of lead. It was not. Not even close. What they had found was the largest, purest deposit of solid graphite ever discovered on Earth. And that purity is the key to this whole story. Everywhere else, graphite was found as a dusty, impure powder. But in Borrowdale, you could literally saw it into sticks, wrap it in string or sheepskin, and start writing.

For the first time, you had a portable, non-liquid, erasable writing tool. And this is where I think the most useful historical analogy comes into play. For about two hundred years, that one mine in Borrowdale was to the world of art, engineering, and communication what the Ghawar oil field in Saudi Arabia would later become to the global economy. It was a singular, strategic resource. The British Crown quickly realized this. They took control of the mine. They flooded it between periods of excavation to prevent theft. They passed laws making the theft of ‘wadd’ a felony punishable by transportation. Armed guards patrolled the site.

An entire black market sprang up, with smugglers sneaking pieces of this precious rock out to the continent, where artists like Leonardo da Vinci had already prized its unique qualities. Think about that. A state-sponsored security operation... for pencil lead. It seems absurd to us now, holding a box of a dozen that cost a few dollars. But in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, English graphite was a geopolitical asset. It was used to make superior molds for casting cannonballs, giving the British navy a technological edge. It was used by architects and engineers to draw the plans for the Industrial Revolution.

It was a tool of war and a tool of creation, and it all came from one hole in the ground in the north of England. The analogy to a modern resource rush holds up remarkably well. You have a single source of a high-value material. You have state control, smuggling, and a global market desperate for it. And just like with any finite resource, the anxiety was always there: What happens when it runs out? Or… what happens when someone cuts off your supply? And that is exactly what happened. In 1792, Revolutionary France went to war with pretty much everyone, including Great Britain. The British Navy established a blockade, and suddenly, France was cut off from the Borrowdale mine.

Their supply of high-quality graphite for drawing, for military maps, for engineering… it was gone. This is the moment where the analogy to the oil crises of the twentieth century becomes almost perfect. A nation’s industrial and military machine is threatened by a resource embargo. But this is also the moment where the analogy breaks, and where the story takes its most important turn. France’s Minister of War was a man named Lazare Carnot. He was tasked by Napoleon Bonaparte himself to find a solution. Carnot, in turn, gave the job to a scientist and officer in the French army named Nicolas-Jacques Conté. Conté was a brilliant inventor—a painter, a balloonist—he’d even lost an eye in a chemistry experiment.

He was exactly the kind of person you’d want on a problem like this. And his solution, developed in 1795, didn't just solve the problem. It redefined the pencil forever. He couldn't find a new source of pure, solid graphite. So he stopped trying. Instead, he took the low-grade graphite powder that was common all over Europe, the stuff that was useless for making pencil sticks. He pulverized it, mixed it with clay and water, pressed the resulting paste into long, thin rods, and then… he fired them in a kiln, like pottery. The result was astonishing. The baked graphite-and-clay core was strong, smooth, and wrote beautifully.

But here’s the genius part. Conté realized that by varying the amount of clay in the mixture, and by firing it at different temperatures, he could control the hardness and darkness of the mark. More clay meant a harder, lighter point—an H pencil. Less clay meant a softer, darker point—a B pencil. This was the invention of the pencil grade. Before Conté, you got whatever the rock from Borrowdale gave you. After Conté, you could manufacture your writing instrument to precise specifications. The crisis didn't just lead to a substitute; it led to a superior, more versatile technology. The resource monopoly was broken not by finding more of the resource, but by inventing a way to make something better from inferior ingredients.

It’s as if, during the 1973 oil crisis, someone had invented a process to turn low-grade swamp muck into high-octane gasoline. It completely changed the game. From there, the pencil as we know it began to take shape. The idea of sandwiching the graphite core between two pieces of wood had been around since the 1500s in Italy, but it was a German cabinet-maker, Kaspar Faber, who first started mass-producing them in 1761, founding the company that would become Faber-Castell. They, and others like them, adopted the Conté process, and the modern pencil industry was born. The eraser came much later. For centuries, people erased graphite marks with balled-up, stale bread.

Seriously. Then, in 1770, an English engineer named Edward Nairne accidentally picked up a piece of rubber instead of his breadcrumb and realized it worked much better. But it was an American, Hymen Lipman, who in 1858 had the bright idea to combine the two. He patented a pencil with a groove at one end where a small piece of rubber could be glued in. The patent was later invalidated—the court ruled it was just combining two existing things—but the idea stuck. And the color? That iconic yellow? That’s pure marketing. In the late 1800s, the best graphite in the world was coming from Siberia. An Austro-Hungarian company called Koh-i-Noor wanted to signal that they were using this premium graphite.

In that era, the color yellow was associated with China, with the "Orient," and with royalty. So they painted their high-end pencils a bright, imperial yellow to shout "quality." The pencil was so successful that competitors all over the world, especially in America, just started painting their pencils yellow, too, to associate their own products with that same standard of excellence. So when we look back, we see this object not as one invention, but as a series of them, stacked on top of each other. A geological accident in England. A wartime innovation in France. Industrial manufacturing in Germany. A clever combination in America.

And a marketing masterstroke from Austria-Hungary. Each step was a response to a problem. Scarcity. War. Convenience. Competition. What this retrospective teaches us, I think, is that the simplest tools are often the most complex. We see a pencil and think "wood and lead." But we know now it’s not lead, it’s graphite and clay. And the wood is usually cedar, chosen for its fine, even grain that sharpens without splintering. The yellow paint is a ghost of a nineteenth-century marketing campaign. The eraser is a happy accident. In a world of touchscreens and keyboards, the pencil remains. It doesn't need to be charged. It has no operating system that needs an update.

It offers a kind of direct, tactile connection between thought and page that a screen can’t quite replicate. The resistance of the graphite on the paper, the smell of the cedar shavings, the finality of a dark line. It’s a technology that was perfected under pressure and has needed very few improvements since. The history of the pencil is a reminder that innovation isn’t always about creating something new from scratch. Sometimes, it’s about finding a better way to use the dust that everyone else has thrown away.
