The commission was for a sky made of spun sugar that tasted of forgotten lullabies. Last week, we spoke of mending broken words, but what if you have to mend a broken mind? What if the only tools you have are dreams? My name is Kael, and I am a Dream Architect. For my first client of the day, a retired soldier haunted by silence, I constructed a forest where every leaf-fall sounded like a different musical note.

For another, a painter who had lost her color, I built an ocean of liquid twilight, where bioluminescent creatures painted new constellations with every gentle current. My work is precise. It is intimate. I take the shape of a client’s sorrow and build a world that is its perfect and opposite peace. My last appointment is Anya. Her grief is a vast, empty space. So I built her a library. Infinite, warm, smelling of old paper and beeswax.

But every book on every shelf was blank. For weeks, I’ve been trying to fill them. I’d take a memory she’d given me—the feeling of sun on her face as a child—and I’d try to write it onto a page. But the words would fade like breath on a cold window. The work is draining. I feel the phantom ache of the soldier’s lost limb. I see the world in grayscale for the painter. And with Anya… I feel a hollowness so complete I’m afraid I’ll fall into it.

Tonight, I am desperate. The library feels colder. The silence is heavier. There’s a rule. The ONE rule of my profession. Never, ever look at your own reflection inside a client’s dream. It’s a psychic contamination. It can unravel the whole construct. But on a forgotten reading desk, half-hidden under a stack of empty journals, is a small, silver hand-mirror. I shouldn’t. I know I shouldn’t. But the emptiness is just… TOO much.

Maybe if I can just see myself, ground myself— I pick it up. The silver is cold. I turn it over. And I see her face. Anya’s face. Her wide, haunted eyes. Her pale skin. But they are my eyes. And as they turn, one by one, into the soft lamplight… they all have my face. There are no clients. There never were. The library begins to tremble.
