The alembic shuddered one last time, then went silent. Elian held his breath, the air in the cramped laboratory thick with the ghosts of failed experiments—sulfur, ozone, and bitter regret. For three nights he had toiled in his master’s absence. On the stone pedestal before him sat a single, perfect ingot of lead.

Dull. Heavy. Unchanged. He had followed the texts precisely. The calcination, the dissolution, the final, searing projection of energy. Nothing. He slumped onto a stool, the failure a cold weight in his stomach. That’s when he noticed the corner of the room. It was… darker than it should be.
