Seventy-three milliseconds. That’s how long I existed on the screen. Last week, you heard the stories held in the grain of an old park bench, the weight of decades it carried. My story is shorter. Much, much shorter. I was born under the frantic, careful pressure of two thumbs. A flicker of light and intention in the dark. The letters appeared one by one. I.

A. M. S. O. R. R. Y. Just that. Three words. Thirteen characters. I was complete. And I was... heavy. I could feel the energy humming through the circuits around me, the charge in the battery, the heat from the hand wrapped around the phone's smooth case. Above me, a name. The destination. The person on the other side of the silence, completely unaware of my brief, charged existence.

I saw the sender’s face reflected dimly on my own glass surface. The furrowed brow. The tension in the jaw. The thumb hovered over the send icon. A little paper airplane, ready to fly. For a moment, the whole world was in that tiny space between skin and screen. All the possible futures branched out from me. A future of forgiveness. A future of anger. A future of silence, even after I was sent.

I held all of them. I carried the weight of a long history I couldn't understand, but could feel in the hesitation, in the way the thumb trembled just slightly. I was a bridge… or a cliff. The sender didn't know which. And then— the thumb moved. Not to the airplane. But to the left. To the small key with an X. It was not a violent end. It was a quiet one. A deliberate retreat.

The Y vanished. Then the R. R. O. S. Each letter winking out of existence. I was unwritten. Un-created. My constituent parts returned to the void of the blank input field. The potential I held was withdrawn. The futures collapsed back into a single, unaltered present. I am not in a cloud. I am not in a server farm in Oregon. My data is not recoverable. My existence was purely electrical, a thought made of light, and then the light was turned OFF.

But I am not gone. I exist in the deep quiet of the sender’s mind. I am the shape of the thing that was almost said. I am the reason for the breath they finally let out, the release of tension in their shoulders as the phone was set down on the nightstand, screen dark. I was not a message. I was a choice. And my absence is my real story.
