The thread that held me for three years, seven months, and two days was a single strand of waxed cotton. Last week, you heard the whispers from the shadows, the stories of the unheard. My story is much smaller, but it also begins with a quiet separation, a moment no one noticed at all. I remember the weight of the wool coat, the smell of rain and faint perfume. I was the third button from the top, the one right over her heart. My life was simple. A gentle pressure in the morning, a release at night.
Then came the jostle on the subway platform. A sharp tug. And for the first time… a snap. I was falling. The world, once a steady rhythm of footsteps and heartbeats, became a spinning chaos of tile and light. I hit the ground with a sound no one could possibly hear over the screech of the train. A tiny, hollow click. And then I was alone. My first journey was propelled by the heel of a leather boot. I skittered across the grimy floor, a blur of discarded tickets and chewing gum stains.
I saw the world from a new perspective. A universe of ankles. Worried ankles, pacing back and forth. Hurried ankles, rushing for the closing doors. A child’s bright red sneakers stopped right in front of me. A small hand, impossibly warm, scooped me up. For a moment, I was held again. I saw a face, wide with curiosity. Then another voice, sharp and tired. “Put that down, it’s filthy.” I was dropped. The warmth vanished. I rolled under a wooden bench. Here, things were slower.
I watched a young man stare at his phone, his thumb hovering over the screen, never quite tapping send. I saw an old woman slowly unwrap a sandwich, saving half for later. These were the moments between moments, the quiet breaths people take when they think no one is watching. I was no longer a fastener, a thing with a purpose. I was just… a witness. It wasn't a loss of purpose, I realized. It was a change. Eventually, a street sweeper’s broom nudged me out from under the bench and into the gutter.
Rain began to fall, washing the city clean. I felt the cool water lift me, carrying me along in a gentle current. I saw the streetlights blur on the surface above me, like stars in a dark river. I passed a discarded flower, its petals slowly unfurling in the water. We were two forgotten things, travelling together for a little while. My polished surface, once meant to catch the light on a fine coat, now reflected a sliver of the moon. I thought of the woman whose coat I’d fallen from.
I hoped she had found a replacement. I hoped she wasn’t cold. The current pulled me toward a dark grate, and I felt no fear. Just a quiet sense of arrival. My journey was over. And my story was finally complete.
