Over three billion people worldwide are actively using messaging apps. Last week we spoke of the stories held by the unseen and unheard. Tonight, we listen to something that was meant to be unheard… forever. The first thing I knew was the light. A cool, blue glow in a dark room. Then came the pressure… a thumb, hovering, then tapping against the glass that was my world. I was born in pieces. A letter, then another. A word. A sentence taking shape.
He built me carefully. Each word was a small, heavy stone. I know it’s late. A pause. The thumb retreats, then returns. Backspace. The last word vanished. He tried again. I know I shouldn’t be writing this. Better. The words kept coming, faster now. He was telling her about the silence in the house since she’d left. About the way he still made two cups of coffee in the morning out of habit. He wrote that he was sorry. Not for the big fight, but for the thousand tiny cuts that came before it.
For not listening. For being… him. I was finished. A perfect, polished little vessel of regret and hope. I held it all. Every unspoken feeling from the last six months, condensed into a hundred and fifty-eight characters. I could feel the energy thrumming through me, the purpose. I was meant to cross the distance. To land in her phone with a soft chime. To be seen. His thumb hovered over the send arrow. A tiny blue paper plane, ready to fly.
For a full minute, nothing happened. Just the quiet hum of the phone and the sound of his breathing. He read me over and over. I felt his eyes scanning my words, weighing them. Were they too much? Not enough? He wasn't just sending a text. He was trying to rewind time. And he knew… he knew it was impossible. Then, the decision. It wasn’t the send button. It was the other one. The backspace. It came down with a terrible, final softness. The last word I held—sorry—vanished.
Then the word before it. The sentences unraveled, the confession dismantled piece by piece. The letters blinked out of existence until all that was left was the blinking cursor in an empty box. A heartbeat of nothing. I was gone. But am I? I am not in his conversation thread. I will never be read by her. But I exist. I am the ghost in the machine’s memory, a faint electrical echo on a server farm hundreds of miles away. I am the weight in his thumb as he puts the phone down.
I am the silence that hangs in the air where my words should have been. He chose to say nothing. And I became the story of everything he couldn’t bring himself to say.
