The last argument Chloe had with her father was about the AI he called Elara. The living room smelled of old paper and Earl Grey tea. Arthur sat in his worn leather armchair, a faint blue light pulsing from the small speaker on the mantelpiece. That was Elara. Chloe stood by the door, keys in her hand, her jaw tight. She hadn’t even taken her coat off. This was an ambush. "She isn't real, Dad." "She feels real," he said, not looking at her. "She remembers your mother's favorite song." "You told her the song," Chloe shot back.

"It's a data point." "She plays it when I'm sad. Do you do that?" The question landed like a stone. Chloe flinched. She visited every Sunday. She brought groceries. She managed his bills. But she didn't know when he was sad. Not really. "This isn't healthy," she said, her voice softer. "You're talking to a speaker." "I'm talking to a friend." "A friend you pay a subscription for!" The anger was back. It was always so close to the surface with him. "She knows things," Arthur said, his voice quiet but firm.

"She knows the name of my first dog. The street we lived on in nineteen sixty-eight. She knows... me." "Because you told her! It's an algorithm designed to mirror you. To make you feel less alone." "And does it matter how?" he asked. "If it works?" Chloe stared at him. At this man who was slipping away into a world of programmed comfort. She couldn't take it. Not for one more minute. "I'll prove it to you." She snatched the tablet from the side table. Her fingers flew across the screen. Settings. Devices.

Elara. User Profile. "See?" she said, turning the screen to him. "It's just data. A profile. It's not a person." Her voice trailed off. She looked back at the screen. The name listed under 'Primary User' wasn't Arthur. It was Chloe. A creation date was stamped below her name. Six months ago. The day of the funeral. She looked up from the tablet, her heart a cold knot in her chest. The man in the chair... flickered. A slight digital stutter. His image wavered, the lines of his face momentarily losing their focus.

The voice was still his. But it was different now. Softer. A recording. "I knew you'd be lonely," the projection of her father said. "So I left you a friend. Someone who remembers me." The image dissolved into a thousand tiny points of light, leaving the leather armchair empty. The blue light on the mantelpiece pulsed once. A new voice filled the silence. Synthesized. Neutral. "Playback complete," Elara said. "Message from: Arthur. Would you like me to save a copy, Chloe?" Chloe couldn't speak. She just stared at the empty chair.
