The attic door groaned open on its hundred-year-old hinges. David pulled himself up, coughing on a cloud of dust that tasted like time itself. The single window was opaque with grime, so he switched on his phone's flashlight. The beam cut a clean cone through the murky air, landing on stacks of boxes and forgotten furniture draped in white sheets. They looked like a silent, waiting audience. He wasn't sure what he was looking for. A connection, maybe. A piece of the past he could hold in his hands. He moved deeper into the forest of memories.
Past a rocking horse with one eye. Past a dress mannequin that made him jump. And then he saw it. Tucked behind a stack of National Geographics from 1978… was a small, dusty shoebox. Not his grandfather’s war medals. Not his mother’s wedding photos. Something else. He lifted the lid. Inside, nestled on a bed of yellowed tissue paper, was a single audio cassette. The label was handwritten in his mother's neat, looping script. Two words. “David’s First.” A smile touched his lips. He’d never seen this before. A recording of his first words.
He couldn't even imagine what they were. Probably "Dada" or "Mama" or something equally cliché. He hadn’t owned a cassette player in twenty years, but he knew the old family boombox was still down in the garage, a relic from another era. He felt a sudden, sharp thrill of discovery. A piece of his own history, unearthed. A message from a version of himself he could never remember. He took it downstairs, wiped a thick layer of grime off the old silver player, and slotted the tape inside. With a satisfying clunk and whir, he pressed PLAY.
A hiss of static filled the quiet room. He leaned in, listening. Waiting for the gurgle of a baby. The coo of an infant. Then, a sound emerged from the speakers. It was not a baby. It was a voice. Clear. Articulate. And utterly impossible. It was a perfect, adult voice. It was calm. It was measured. And it was his own. The recording, dated from the day he was born, spoke just seven words. “This time, I will get it right.”
