The last tube of cerulean blue cost Elias everything he had. He held it like a prayer. In his studio, the air was thick with the ghost of turpentine and failed attempts. A painted apple, once perfect, now rotted on a side table. A painted bird had long ago flown the coop. His magic was real. It was also lonely. So he decided to paint his masterpiece. Not a landscape. A person. A companion to fill the crushing silence. He poured weeks into the canvas, ignoring the world outside his grimy window.
He mixed his longing into the pigments. His hope into the fine lines around her eyes. He gave her the smile he hadn't seen on his own face in years. He talked to her, whispering secrets to the still-wet oils. And for her eyes… he used the cerulean blue. The color of a perfect sky you could fall into forever. The painting became more real than his own reflection. He could almost feel her breath, hear her thoughts in the quiet of the room. The final stroke was a single, delicate eyelash.
He stepped back, heart hammering in his chest. He had made her perfect. He had made her real. And he waited. The clock ticked. The silence screamed. Nothing. The magic had failed him. The apple was a fluke. The bird, a dream. He slumped into a chair, the smell of paint suddenly making him sick. Then… a voice. Softer than velvet. "You know," it said from behind him. "You missed a spot." He whipped around. She was there. Real. Breathing. And on the easel… the canvas wasn't empty. It held a painting of a man.
A man trapped behind a layer of oil and pigment, staring out with eyes full of desperate, suffocating loneliness. It was him. He looked from the canvas to the woman. She held up a paintbrush, her smile sad and knowing. "You didn't paint me out of thin air, Elias," she said. Her voice was music. "You traded places." He had poured so much of himself into her that there was nothing left. He had painted himself into a cage to set her free. He tried to speak, but only the scent of drying paint filled the air.
She walked to the easel, looked at the portrait—at him—with a strange tenderness. Then she dipped the brush in white pigment. "What are you doing?" the world heard him think. She began to paint on the canvas, just to the right of his face. "Don't worry," she whispered. "I'm just giving you a better view."
