The gap in the patrol was exactly four point seven seconds. Last week, a child’s drawing in a silent bunker told the whole story. This week, the story is told by a heartbeat. For three hundred days, he’d planned. Floating in the warm, constant darkness. The only landmark was the sound. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. The guard’s patrol. Inescapable. A rhythm that rocked him, measured his existence. The walls of his cell were strange. Not concrete, not steel. They were soft, yielding to pressure but always pressing back.

Alive. I learned their limits. A kick here. An elbow there. Each day, the space felt smaller. Or maybe I was just getting bigger. Stronger. Food was a constant, tasteless supply, delivered through a thick cord tethered to his center. It fueled his obsession. I didn't know what was outside. I only knew it was SOMEWHERE. I dreamed of stretching my limbs without hitting a wall. I dreamed of light. Sometimes, muffled vibrations came through the walls. Voices. One was a low rumble. Another was higher, a soft hum that seemed to soothe the very structure around him.

The Wardens. I couldn’t understand their words. I didn’t need to. Their tone was irrelevant. Freedom was the only goal. There was a gate, I was sure of it. A door that had never opened. Then, on day three hundred and one, the patrol changed. The beat quickened. Thump-thump-thump-thump. Faster and faster. A frantic alarm. The walls began to move. A deep tremor shook the entire facility. The soft walls began to squeeze, a relentless, rhythmic pressure. This is it. It’s happening. The final lockdown… or the escape.

The pressure became immense, pushing him down. Forcing him toward the bottom of the cell. Toward the gate he’d only ever imagined. And then I saw it. A seam of light. A crack in the world. It was blinding. He was being forced toward it. The passage was impossibly tight. Scraping. Suffocating. And then… release. Sudden, shocking cold. Noise. So much noise. The light was a white fire that burned my eyes. He tried to take a breath, but the air was an agony in his lungs. A scream he didn’t recognize tore from his own throat, raw and primal.

Gentle hands lifted him. He was impossibly small. He heard the soft voice—the Warden's voice—clear for the very first time. "Oh, look at you," she cried, her voice thick with exhaustion and love. "He’s beautiful."
