The final artifact was a shard of translucent blue, cool even through the thin fabric of the gloves. Last week, we talked about how an entire story can turn on its final sentence. How the last line is the ONLY one that matters. This story is built on that same promise. Alex cradled the shard. The Archive was silent, as always. Temperature controlled to exactly nineteen degrees Celsius. Air filtered three times a minute. It was a perfect, sterile tomb for a dead world, and Alex was its sole keeper.
The protocols were absolute. Entry required a full decontamination cycle. Every object was handled with consecrated tools. This was not a job. It was a sacred duty. Four thousand, one hundred and twelve objects. Each one rescued from the grey dust and ruins of the Before Times. Before the Great Forgetting. Alex was the only one who remembered. Or… the only one left to remember. Sometimes, flashes would come. The memory of a bright, painful light in the sky.
The feeling of running. The shouting of a name that might have been Alex's own. But the details were smoke. The artifacts were the only real things left. Alex would spend hours with them. Tracing the strange, flower-like pattern on a circular metal disc—once called a "coin." Trying to imagine the sound from the musical instrument with its three silver strings. Imagining the life of the person who wore the single, petrified shoe.
A child, Alex decided. It belonged to a child who was running toward something. Or away. Alex was the memory of them all. A living monument. And now, the work was almost done. This blue shard. The Heart of the Citadel. It was the last piece. The one that made the entire collection whole. With the slow, deliberate motion of a priest, Alex moved to the central plinth. The final cradle was waiting. Empty. Expectant. Alex lowered the blue shard.
It slid into place. A soft, satisfying click echoed in the silent room. It was done. Complete. Alex stood back, hands finding their way to their hips, admiring the work. Four thousand, one hundred and twelve silent voices, finally at peace. The silence in the Archive felt different now. Not empty. But finished. A great work, concluded at last. Then, a voice from a world away boomed through the sacred quiet. "Alex, honey, dinner's ready!
And please, for the last time, put your LEGOs away before you come downstairs."
