The bell dinged for the third time at the same stop. Elena glanced in the wide mirror above her head. Nothing. No one moving toward the door. It was the end of the line. The last run. Outside, the streetlights of the industrial park cast long, empty shadows. She saw her in the mirror then. An older woman, maybe seventy-five, with a faded floral scarf tied around her head, clutching a black patent-leather purse so old the corners were worn down to the fiber. The woman just stared out the window. Her shoulders were hunched. Elena killed the engine. The hydraulic hiss of the bus sighing to a stop was the only sound. "Ma'am?" Elena called out, her voice soft.

"This is the last stop. Kenniston Yard." The woman turned, her eyes wide with a gentle panic. "Oh. Oh dear. I... I must have missed my transfer. For the 42." The 42. That bus had stopped running an hour ago. The depot was a ghost town after 10 p.m. Just a concrete island under buzzing fluorescent lights. The woman’s hands trembled slightly as she fumbled with her purse clasp. "Is there... is there another one coming?" Elena knew the answer. She also knew what it meant. An hour-long wait, alone, in the cold November air. Elena stood up. She walked down the short aisle, the rubber soles of her boots silent on the floor. She didn't stand over the woman. She knelt in the aisle, so they were eye to eye.

"My name is Elena." The woman looked at her, surprised. "I'm Agnes," she whispered. Elena smiled. "Agnes. It's cold out there. And my bus is warm. Tell you what." She pulled out her own phone. "Where does your daughter live?" Agnes gave her the address, her voice barely audible. Elena’s thumb tapped on the screen. A few moments passed in the quiet warmth of the bus. A car pulled up to the curb, its headlights cutting through the gloom. Elena walked with Agnes to the door of the rideshare. She opened it for her. She gave the driver the address and a folded twenty-dollar bill from her own wallet. "Make sure she gets right to the door," Elena said. Agnes didn't say thank you.

She couldn't. She just squeezed Elena's hand, her papery skin cool against Elena's. Then she was gone. Elena watched the taillights disappear around the corner. She climbed back into her driver’s seat, the bus empty now, just the lingering scent of lavender from the woman’s scarf. She started the engine, another invisible journey complete.
