The backspace key was hit one hundred and twelve times during my creation. Each deletion was a small retreat, a moment of fear before the truth pushed forward again, determined to exist. I was born from this conflict, a vessel for a confession that had been silent for six years, four months, and eleven days. I began as a single, blinking cursor in a blank field.
Then came the words, first in a torrent, then painstakingly chosen. "I need to tell you something." Deleted. "You deserve to know the truth." Deleted. Finally, just a name. The recipient's name in the "To" field. That was the first hurdle. It stayed there for three minutes before it, too, was erased. The sender decided I would be a letter to no one, for now.
And so, I was saved. Not sent, but saved. I was moved to the purgatory of the Drafts folder. From there, I watched. I was a silent observer of a life lived around the edges of what I contained. I saw other emails, full of exclamation points and meeting requests, get sent without a second thought. I saw online shopping receipts and newsletters from forgotten subscriptions pile up in the inbox.
My creator would live their day—making coffee, taking calls, laughing at a video someone forwarded—and I would wait. Several times a day, they would visit me. The click of my name in the Drafts list was the only sound. The screen would fill with my words. "The reason I left wasn't what I said it was." "I think about it every single day." The sender's face, illuminated by the screen, would be still.
Their breath, slow. They weren't reading me. They were communing with the memory that had built me. Sometimes a word would be changed. "Regret" became "remorse." "Sorry" became "unforgivable." Tiny edits, like turning a stone over and over in your hand. Each visit ended the same way. The "Save" button would be clicked, and I would be returned to the quiet dark of the folder, my purpose still unfulfilled.
Then came the final visit. It was late. The only light in the room was the one I cast. This time was different. The mouse pointer didn't drift over the text. It moved with a terrible certainty, up to the top of the window. It hovered, for just a moment, over the word "Send." I could feel the digital potential, the packets of information ready to fly across the network, to arrive, to detonate a life.
I felt a sort of readiness. An electric hum. But the cursor didn't click. It trembled. And then, it moved. Not left, toward "Send." But down, to the small icon of a trash can. The click was soft. There was no pain. There was no sound. It was just... a letting go. My code, the carefully arranged ones and zeros that formed the words "I loved you," was disassembled.
I was unwritten. My constituent parts were released back into the vast, quiet ocean of unallocated space on the hard drive. I wasn't sent. I wasn't read. And I think, in the end, I was never meant to be. Some things are written not to tell someone else, but to prove to yourself that they can be said at all.
