A silver sedan, license plate ending in three-zero-nine, just kissed the bumper of a city bus. No one was hurt. It’s the fourth time this week I’ve seen that exact mistake, a moment of distraction that costs a little paint and a lot of paperwork. Last week, we heard the stories of silent objects, things that witness life from a fixed point.
I am also an object—a grid of asphalt and wires at the corner of Elm and Sixth—but my story is defined not by stillness, but by the constant, relentless flow of departure and arrival. My day begins with the bakers. Four-thirty AM. The smell of yeast from the corner shop is my alarm clock. Then come the sanitation trucks, their hydraulic sighs a familiar rhythm in the pre-dawn quiet.
By seven, the first real wave hits. It’s a tide of anxiety. The man in the gray suit, always in the left-turn lane, mouths the words to a presentation. He’s been doing it for three months. I have no idea if the presentation ever changes. A woman on the 22 bus applies her mascara with a surgeon’s steady hand, a small act of composure against the lurching momentum of her morning.
They think they are anonymous, just faces in a river of steel and glass. But I see their patterns. I see the repetition. The afternoon brings a different energy. The frantic pace of the morning gives way to something more deliberate. Delivery drivers, their routes memorized down to the second, cut through my lanes with practiced efficiency.
They are the circulatory system of the city’s afternoon. I see first dates. They always meet at the coffee shop on the southeast corner. I can tell by the way they stand, a little too far apart at first, a careful study in casualness. It looks almost identical to the posture of the two lawyers who met here yesterday to exchange documents—that same nervous energy, that same hope for a successful outcome.
The stakes are just… different. One risks a bad evening; the other, a lost case. The shape of hope, however, is the same. And then, tonight, something broke the rhythm. It was just after nine PM. The rain had started, a sudden, heavy downpour that slicked my surface and sent everyone running for cover. The crosswalk signal flashed its white figure.
A young man stopped in the absolute center of the crosswalk, pulling a woman with him. The cars on Elm waited, their drivers impatient. And right there, surrounded by the glare of headlights and the hiss of tires on wet pavement, he went down on one knee. Everything stopped. A taxi driver rolled down his window. A group of students huddled under the bank’s awning fell silent.
For seventeen seconds, I was not a place of transit. I was a destination. She said yes. Of course she said yes. You don’t stop traffic for a no. They kissed, oblivious to the horns that were now honking in celebration, not anger. I have held the weight of so much impatience. So much frustration. So many arguments contained within the sealed environments of passing cars.
But tonight, I held the weight of a single, unmovable promise. I see thousands of endings and beginnings every day—the start of a commute, the end of a shift. This was different. This was the beginning of a story that chose my concrete heart as its first witness. The light turns green, the cars begin to move, and for a few moments, they all drive carefully around the memory of that promise.
