Right then, love, snuggle down. I've got my brew, the cat's having a little snooze on my lap. Perfect. The wind was telling secrets tonight. You know that sort of wind? The kind that rattles the windows and makes the trees whisper to each other. It takes a bit of gentle bravery to listen to the wind, eh? Just like our Leo learned with that tapping noise last week. This is a story about that kind of bravery. It's about a girl named Chloe. She was tucked up in bed, warm as a toast in a pocket. Her quilt was pulled right up to her chin. Outside, the wind was having a proper good go. It howled a bit.
It moaned a bit. And then... it whispered. A soft, scratchy sound, right at her window. Shhh... shhh... shhh. Chloe’s eyes went wide in the dark. She held her breath. The sound came again. Shhh... shhh... shhh. It didn't sound like the wind. Not really. It sounded like someone was out there. Someone telling her to be quiet. Her heart started doing a little pitter-patter dance against her ribs. She pulled the quilt over her head. But even under there, she could hear it. Or she thought she could. Was it a ghost? A garden gnome who'd lost his hat? Ooh, you never know. She remembered what her dad always said.
Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It just means you don't let the scared feeling be the boss of you. Finding a trusted grown-up is a VERY good skill. So, Chloe took a big, deep breath. She pushed back the quilt. And she called out, in a voice that was only a little bit wobbly. "Dad?" A moment later, the door creaked open. A sliver of light fell across her floor. Dad was there, looking sleepy. "Ey up, chuck? What's the matter?" "There's a whisper," she whispered. Now, her dad didn't say, "Don't be silly." Because he knew that a sound that can whisper through a window IS something.
He just nodded. "Right then," he said. "Let's go and be introduced." Chloe grabbed her bravest teddy, Sir Reginald. Dad picked up a big torch. Together, the three of them crept to the window. Chloe’s heart was still pattering, but now it felt more like an adventure. Dad put his arm around her. "Ready?" he asked. She nodded, holding Sir Reginald tight. Dad flicked on the torch. A bright beam shot out into the windy dark. It lit up the wobbly raindrops on the glass. It lit up the lawn, all shiny and wet. And it lit up the big willow tree at the bottom of the garden. One of its long, leafy branches had grown so far, it was brushing right against Chloe’s window.
As the wind blew, the branch swayed. Shhh... shhh... shhh. It wasn't a secret. It wasn't a ghost. It was just the tree, dancing in the wind. Chloe let out a little giggle. All that fuss over a branch. Dad chuckled too. "Well," he said. "It seems the willow tree wanted to say goodnight." They decided to give the sound a name. They called it the Willow Wiggle. From her bed, Chloe watched the branch dance. Wiggle... wiggle... wiggle. It wasn't a scary sound anymore. It was a sleepy sound. A friendly sound. A sound that told her the world outside was just getting ready for bed, too. The wind can tell all sorts of stories, love.
Sometimes they sound a bit spooky at first. But usually, if you listen with someone you trust, you find out they’re just friendly old stories after all. Night night, sleep tight, chuck.
