Flicker tucked his wings tight against the damp clover leaf. Down in the tall grass where Barnaby the badger once wandered, the night felt very vast. The evening air was cool and smelled like wet earth and clover blooms. High above, the older fireflies danced among the oak branches. They flashed like bright, golden sparks against the twilight. Every flash lit up the whole underside of a leaf, bold and wide. Flicker tried to squeeze out a glow of his own. He held his breath. He squeezed his small belly.

A tiny, pale greenish light flickered at his tail. It was hardly bigger than a speck of dust. It didn't reach the branch above him. It didn't even reach the next clover petal. Flicker let out his breath, and his little speck faded right back into the dark. "I am just too dim," he whispered into the moss. Worry is a heavy thing to carry when your legs are no thicker than sewing needles. It pressed down on Flicker's back like a water drop that wouldn't shake off. He wanted to float up high with the others.

He wanted to trace bright lines through the humid air. But when he looked at their brilliant flashes, his own little spark felt like nothing at all. It felt like an accident. He tucked his head down and decided he wouldn't try to shine anymore. A tiny, dry scratching sound rose from the hollow beneath a fallen oak leaf. Flicker raised his antennae. Down in the shadows, a baby field mouse was shivering beside a tangle of briars. The mouse had lost her way in the deep grass, and every time the big fireflies flashed above, the sudden glare made her jump.

Their bright light was like lightning to her small eyes. It cast sharp, scary shadows that darted across the stones. "It hurts my eyes," the mouse whimpered softly. Flicker crawled out from under his clover leaf. He took a slow breath. He didn't try to squeeze or push this time. He just let his gentle, steady light seep out. It didn't flash. It didn't burst. It simply glowed, like a single, warm ember resting in the moss. He drifted down toward the hollow, humming his wings quietly. The mouse didn't run away.

The soft green glow didn't blind her. It didn't make scary shadows jump across the ground. It lit up just a few inches of damp earth at a time. It showed the soft moss, the smooth brown pebbles, and a safe little tunnel beneath the briar roots. "Follow me," Flicker said softly. "Just one step." He flew low and slow, keeping his light quiet and steady. Step by small step, the baby mouse followed that warm, pale beam all the way to her mother's burrow. The great swarm above kept flashing, brilliant and wild against the night sky.

They owned the tops of the trees. But down on the forest floor, in the quiet places where little feet have to find their way, too much brightness only blinds. Flicker settled back onto his clover petal and let his soft light breathe. Being small doesn't mean your glow is missing; it just means you're built for the gentle dark.
