The other bears were very loud today. Their roars and rumbles echoed through the woods. It reminded me of our friend Dot, who once found the whole meadow just a little too loud. For a small bear named Barnaby, today was that kind of day. He sat by himself, on a patch of the greenest moss. He was watching the clouds drift by. They looked like soft piles of cotton, sailing in a big blue sea. The other little bears were playing Tumble Tag. It was a game of crashing and rolling and shouting.
"Barnaby! Come play!" called a big brown bear named Boris. Barnaby’s heart gave a little thump. He wanted to play. He wanted to have friends. But Tumble Tag always felt too fast. Too much. The noise made his ears feel fuzzy. The tumbling made his head feel dizzy. He gave a tiny shake of his head. Boris just shrugged and tumbled away with another bear. Barnaby pulled his paws in a little closer. He felt a familiar ache, a small, lonely stone in his chest. Was there something wrong with him?
Why didn't he like the same things? He just wanted to watch the gentle breezes make patterns in the tall grass. He wanted to listen to the whisper of the leaves. Not the roars of a game. He tried. He really did. One time, he’d run to join in. He’d tried to be loud. He’d tried to be rough and tumble. But it didn't feel like him. It felt like wearing a costume that was too big and scratchy. He had stumbled, and the other bears had laughed. It wasn't a mean laugh. It was just… a laugh. But it had made him feel even smaller.
So he had gone back to his mossy patch. Alone. He was tracing the shape of a dragon in the clouds when he heard a new sound. It wasn't a roar or a tumble. It was a soft little rustle in the ferns beside him. He peeked through the leaves. A small fox with fur the color of autumn leaves and bright, kind eyes was sitting there. She wasn’t watching the game, either. She was watching a little yellow butterfly dance on a flower. She was perfectly still. Perfectly quiet. She turned her head and saw Barnaby.
He thought she might run away. Or maybe call him to play a chasing game. But she didn't. She just blinked her dark, curious eyes. "What are you doing?" she whispered. Her voice was as soft as the moss he was sitting on. "Watching the clouds," Barnaby whispered back. The little fox’s ears perked up. A tiny smile played on her face. "Me too," she said. "Sometimes. I like finding the shapes." She crept out from the ferns and sat down near Barnaby. Not too close. Just close enough. "I see a dragon," Barnaby said, pointing his nose to the sky.
The fox, whose name was Willow, tilted her head. "Oh! I see it too. And over there… I think that one looks like a sleepy rabbit." They sat together for a long time. They didn't speak much. They didn't need to. They pointed out a boat, a castle, and a very wobbly ice cream cone in the sky. The sounds of Tumble Tag faded into the background. They were just a distant rumble now. Not scary at all. Here, in their quiet world, there was only the soft breeze, the dancing butterfly, and the endless shapes in the sky.
A warm feeling spread through Barnaby’s chest, melting the little stone of loneliness completely away. He wasn't a bear who didn't like to play. He was a bear who loved the quiet whisper of the world. And sometimes, all it takes is one good friend to sit beside you. To see the same dragon in the clouds. To show you that being the quiet one doesn't mean you have to be ALONE. There is nothing to fix. There is nothing to do, except breathe peacefully. Together.
