A single sock can lose its partner somewhere between the laundry basket and the dryer ninety-seven percent of the time. Last week, we heard the secret whispers of the flowers in the moonlit garden. Tonight, we’re listening for a sound that’s a little… closer. In a room filled with moonlight, a girl named Maya was tucked snugly in her bed. Everything was quiet. Everything was still. And then… it wasn’t. From the corner of the room came a sound. A soft… rustle. Maya’s eyes popped open. She listened. The house was asleep.
The world was asleep. But something in her room… was NOT. Rustle… scrabble… thump. It came from the big wicker laundry basket. Her heart went pitter-pat. A fast little drumbeat against her pajamas. What could it BE? A tiny mouse wearing her dad’s t-shirt as a tent? A fluff-monster made of dryer lint? The rustling stopped. Then it started again. Louder this time. Scraaaaaaape. Wiggle. THUMP. Maya pulled her blanket up to her chin. A part of her wanted to hide. To squeeze her eyes shut and pretend she heard nothing. But another part of her… a brave, curious part… wiggled its toes.
She thought about the brave flowers in the garden, standing tall in the dark. She could be brave, too. She took a deep breath. One. Two. Three. She swung her legs out of bed. The floor was cool. She tiptoed across her rug, one silent step at a time, toward the basket. Toward the sound. She was an explorer. An adventurer. A Knight of the Nighttime! She reached the basket. She peeked over the edge. And she saw… clothes. A pile of shirts and pants. And… one bright yellow sock with green stripes. As she watched, the yellow sock… JUMPED.
Maya jumped, too! But then she looked closer. The yellow sock was stuck to her big, fuzzy pink sweater. A tiny, fizzing spark of static electricity crackled between them, and the sock wiggled and hopped like it was trying to dance. It wasn’t a monster. It wasn’t a mouse. It was a sock-and-sweater dance party! A giggle escaped Maya’s lips. It was so… SILLY. She carefully reached in and peeled the sock off the sweater. The crackling stopped. The wiggling stopped. She held the sock in her hand. “You’re a funny little guy,” she whispered.
She decided to name him Wiggles. Maya tiptoed back to her bed, clutching Wiggles the sock. She wasn’t scared AT ALL. She was brave. She was an explorer who had solved the mystery of the rustling basket. She tucked Wiggles next to her on her pillow, pulled the covers up, and closed her eyes. And this time, the only sound in the room was her own soft, sleepy breathing.
