The thumping started at exactly ten-oh-three. It wasn't a quiet whisper in the corner, like the one Maya discovered in her moonlit room. This was a deep, steady... THUMP. THUMP. THUMP. Right above Alex’s bed. In the attic. Alex pulled the blankets up to their chin. The only light was a sliver of moon, painting a stripe across the floor. Everything in the room was asleep. The toys were asleep. The books were asleep. But the ceiling was WIDE awake. THUMP... THUMP... THUMP. It sounded...
rhythmic. Almost like a beat. Alex’s heart started to beat along with it. A tiny drum in the quiet room. Was it a giant? Practicing his stomping? Was it a monster playing basketball? A very, very clumsy monster? Alex slid one foot out of the warm bed. Then the other. The floorboards were cool. Tiptoe, tiptoe, to the bedroom door. The hallway was dark, but Alex knew the way. Past the sleeping parents’ room. To the little string that dangled from the ceiling. The string that led to the attic.
Alex took a deep breath. Reached up. And pulled. The stairs unfolded with a long, slow, creeeeeak. It sounded like the house was yawning. Alex put one foot on the first step. It groaned. Another foot on the second. It moaned. Each step was a new sound in the quiet night. At the top, a square of darkness waited. The thumping was louder here. THUMP. THUMP. THUMP. It was coming from the far corner. Behind a stack of old boxes. Alex peeked around the boxes. And saw... not a giant. Not a monster.
It was a creature, but the smallest, fluffiest, roundest creature Alex had ever seen. It looked like it was made of lost socks, bits of sparkly tinsel, and a whole lot of happy dust. It had two big, wobbly button eyes. And it was standing on an old wooden crate, very seriously lifting one fluffy foot... and bringing it down with a... THUMP. It lifted the other foot. THUMP. It was trying to tap dance. The little creature saw Alex and froze, one foot in the air. It looked embarrassed.
Alex didn't scream. Alex giggled. A tiny puff of a laugh. The creature’s button eyes blinked. Alex took a step forward. "Are you... dancing?" Alex whispered. The creature, a Grumble-Fuzz, Alex decided, wobbled its head in a nod. It was practicing for the annual Attic Talent Show, but it just couldn't get the rhythm right. Alex smiled. Alex stayed for a few minutes, quietly clapping a slow, steady beat. One... two... three... four. The Grumble-Fuzz started to thump its feet in time.
THUMP-thump, THUMP-thump. It looked so proud. Soon, it was time for bed. Alex tiptoed back down the creaky stairs, pushed them back into the ceiling, and slipped back under the covers. The thumping started again. THUMP-thump, THUMP-thump. But now, it wasn't a scary sound. It was the sound of a new friend, practicing their dance. It was the best lullaby in the whole wide, sleepy house.
