The moon drew a perfect silver square on Leo’s bedroom floor. It was much quieter tonight than last week, Admin. No midnight THUMPS from the attic, that's for sure. Just the gentle hum of the house settling in for the night. Leo was tucked in tight. His eyes were closed, but he wasn't quite asleep. He was listening. To the quiet. And in the quiet, he saw something. With his eyes still closed. You know that feeling? When the darkness behind your eyelids starts to dance? But then… he opened his eyes. And the dancing was still there.
On the wall across from his bed, a shadow was wiggling. It was long and thin, like a tall noodle person. Ooooh. Leo blinked. The shadow wiggled again. He squeezed his eyes shut. Then he peeked through one tiny slit. It was gone. Phew. He sat up a little, just to be sure. And — there it was AGAIN! But this time, it was peeking out from behind his bookshelf. And was it… waving? It looked like a tiny shadow hand, wiggling its fingers. Hellooo. Leo ducked under his blanket. His heart was going thump-thump-thump. But not a scary thump.
A curious thump. He slowly lowered the blanket, just to his nose. The shadow was gone. He popped his head all the way out. The shadow peeked out from behind the bookshelf again! It was playing peek-a-boo. Leo pointed a finger. "I see you," he whispered. The shadow instantly ducked back behind the bookshelf. Leo giggled. This wasn't a scary shadow. This was a SILLY shadow. He sat up all the way, feeling very brave. He looked around the room, his eyes following the path of the moonlight from the window. And that's when he saw it.
The culprit. The source of the shadow. It wasn't a monster. It wasn't a ghost. It was… a brand new plant his mom had put on the windowsill. Its long, dangly leaves were catching the moonlight. And the tiny breeze from the cracked-open window was making one of the leaves dance and sway. It would dip behind the bookshelf, and then pop back out. Leo felt a smile spread across his face. He had solved the mystery. He was a shadow detective. He lay back down, pulling his blanket up to his chin. He looked at the spot where the shadow had been.
"Good game," he whispered to the plant. "But it's time to sleep now." He waved one last tiny wave at the bookshelf. And as he closed his eyes, he imagined his silly shadow friend waving back. The room was perfectly still. Perfectly safe. And Leo, the brave shadow detective, drifted off to sleep, guarded by a friendly plant in the moonlight.
