The giggle started at exactly seven fifty-nine PM. Leo was tucked into bed, his breathing slow and even, almost asleep. And then he heard it. Tee-hee-hee. It wasn't a scary sound. It wasn't a creak or a groan or a bump in the night. It was a happy sound. A secret, bubbly little laugh, coming from somewhere inside the house. Leo’s eyes popped open in the dark. He held his breath. He heard it again. Hee-hee-hee-hee. It sounded like someone was being tickled. But... who? Mom and Dad were downstairs watching a movie.

And they were definitely not giggling. This was a mystery. A top-secret, late-night, under-the-covers kind of mystery. Leo slipped out of his bed, his bare feet silent on the wooden floor. He tiptoed to his door and cracked it open just enough to peek. The hallway was dark, with just a little bit of light coming up the stairs. GIGGLE. It was louder out here. It seemed to be coming from the end of the hall. Leo crept forward, one step at a time. The floorboards made a little groaning sound. Ooooh, spooky.

Not really. Leo wasn't scared. He was curious. The sound led him past the bathroom, past his parents' room, all the way to the very end of the hall. And there he saw it. The little string that opened the door to the attic... was swinging. Just a tiny bit. Back and forth. Back and forth. And the giggling was coming from… up there. Alright. This was the moment. The moment a great detective decides to be brave. Leo reached up, grabbed the string, and pulled. The old wooden stairs unfolded with a long, slow groooooan.

He put one foot on the first step. It held. He climbed. Up, up, up into the dusty, shadowy attic. It smelled like old books and forgotten sweaters. He took another step, and then he heard it, closer than ever. A happy little burst of laughter, right in front of him. He flicked on the little flashlight he'd grabbed from his nightstand. And the beam of light landed on an old travel trunk. Sitting on top of it was a little girl. Except… Leo could see the trunk right through her. She was shimmery and see-through, like a soap bubble in the sun.

And she was tickling her own shimmery, see-through feet with a long, white, see-through feather. She looked up, her eyes wide. The giggling stopped. For a second, they just stared at each other. The boy holding a flashlight, and the ghost-girl holding a feather. She wasn't scary at all. She just looked… lonely. Then, she smiled a wobbly, see-through smile. She held out the ghostly feather to him. Leo reached for it, but his hand went right through. He tried again. Poof. Right through. He looked at his hand, then at her.

And a little giggle escaped his own lips. Her smile grew wider. And she started to giggle, too. The old, spooky attic wasn't spooky anymore. It was filled with the sound of two friends, sharing a secret laugh in the dark.
