On the very edge of the Whispering Pond, a single drop of moonlight landed on a lily pad. It looked just like a tiny fallen star. Perhaps it was a message from Stella, the smallest star we met last time, saying hello to the world below. A little frog named Ferdinand saw it happen.
His eyes, as round and bright as two polished pebbles, watched the light shimmer. Ferdinand was a very small frog, living on a very big pond. He had never been all the way to the other side. But tonight, he saw another light over there, winking at him from the tall reeds.
It was soft and gentle, and it made him feel very curious. He decided he would go on an adventure. He took a deep breath, crouched his little legs, and made his first tiny hop. Plip. He landed on the next lily pad. It bobbed gently under his weight.
He looked back at his home. It was still close. He looked forward to the light. It was still far. But he wasn't scared. He felt brave. Plip. Another hop. And another. He hopped past a water lily, closed for the night, its petals tucked in like a blanket.
He heard the gentle hum of the crickets singing their sleepy song. The moon watched over him, a big, kind eye in the dark sky. Each lily pad was a little island on his journey. Finally, he reached the other side. The air was still and sweet with the smell of damp earth and night-blooming flowers.
He hopped onto the muddy bank and crept toward the light. It was coming from behind a thick, velvety cattail. He peeked around it. And he gasped a tiny frog gasp. It wasn't one light. It was a hundred tiny lights. A spider had spun her web between two long blades of grass.
And all night long, the evening mist had kissed it, leaving behind tiny, perfect dewdrops. Each dewdrop had caught a piece of the moonlight. They were all glowing together, a delicate necklace of light strung across the darkness. It was the most beautiful thing Ferdinand had ever seen.
He felt a deep, quiet happiness fill his little frog heart. The world was so full of wonder. He didn't need to go far to find it. Sometimes, it was waiting right there, in a place you’d never looked before. Feeling very peaceful, and very sleepy, Ferdinand turned around.
He hopped his way back across the pond, lily pad by lily pad. This time, his hops were slower, more thoughtful. He found his own cozy spot, curled up his little legs, and closed his eyes. And as he drifted off to sleep, he dreamed of a hundred tiny moons, all shining just for him.
