The surface of the water shivered just a little. It wasn't from the wind, which was sleeping soundly tonight. It was from a tiny new ripple, just waking up. Last night, we watched Wisp the little cloud drift across the sky; tonight, we are down on the quiet pond. This new ripple was named Ripply. And it was very, very small. It looked around the great big quiet of the pond. The world was dark and silver.
Above, the moon hung like a soft, round lantern. It was so bright and beautiful. Ripply wanted to get a closer look. So, with a tiny wiggle, Ripply started to move. It slid across the water, which felt as smooth as silk. It was a slow and gentle journey. Ripply passed a big, flat leaf where a sleepy frog was dreaming. Shhhh. It didn't want to wake him. Then, Ripply saw it. The moon. But it wasn't in the sky.
It was right here, in the water. A perfect, shining circle of light floating on the dark surface. Ohhh. Ripply had never seen anything so magical. It danced toward the floating moon, wanting to say hello. But as Ripply got closer, the moon began to wobble. The perfect circle broke into a hundred shimmering pieces of light. They danced and swirled all around Ripply. It was like the moon was tickling the water.
Ripply giggled a watery little giggle, and the pieces of light danced even more. When Ripply held very still, the pieces slowly came back together. There it was again. The perfect moon, floating in the water. Then, something else caught Ripply's eye. Tiny, glittering specks of light. They were scattered all across the pond's dark mirror. They were the stars. Ripply moved toward a particularly bright one.
It twinkled and blinked, as if it was winking a secret message. Ripply tried to wink back, sending a tiny wave toward the star's reflection. The star shimmered in reply. A firefly, seeing all the lights in the water, flew down from a willow tree. It landed on a cattail, its own little lantern glowing on and off. On. And off. Its light made a tiny golden path on the water, another friend for Ripply to meet.
Ripply realized the whole sky was here. It was all floating in the pond. The big moon. The thousands of twinkling stars. The little firefly's glow. Ripply didn't have to travel up into the sky to meet them. They had all come down to visit. To float here, together, in the quiet of the night. Ripply wasn't just a tiny ripple on the water. It was a keeper of the sky. So Ripply stopped trying to touch the lights.
Instead, it just held them. It grew very still, making the water a perfect, glassy mirror. The moon became a solid, peaceful circle again. The stars stopped shimmering and just shone with a steady, gentle light. Ripply held them all, feeling their quiet, sleepy energy. The little ripple felt very calm now. Very peaceful. It was a part of the big, beautiful night. And as it held the moon and stars, Ripply slowly, gently, drifted off to sleep.
Goodnight, little one.
