Are you getting sleepy now, little one? The moon is climbing high in the sky. Just like it did for our friend Ripply on the pond. Tonight, it's looking for someone else to play with. Down below, nestled by the root of a big oak tree, a little shadow wakes up. Its name was Shade. And it didn't have a shape of its own. Not really. When the big oak tree swayed, Shade swayed too. When a little leaf fell, Shade wiggled as the leaf's shadow danced over it. Then, the moon sent down a long, silvery beam of light.

It landed right in front of Shade. The little shadow had never seen anything so beautiful. It was like a soft, quiet slide made of starlight. Shade crept forward, just a little bit. It touched the edge of the moonbeam. And something wonderful happened. Where Shade touched the light, it became darker, and longer, and stretched out like morning taffy. It wiggled its new, long shadow-toes in the cool moonlight. It was dancing. Without even trying. A little moth fluttered past, its wings like dusty paper.

Its shadow flickered and zipped across the ground. Shade tried to catch it. It stretched and leaped, a silent, joyful game of tag. The moth's shadow would land on a leaf, and Shade would stretch to touch it. Then whoosh! It was gone again, dancing near a sleeping daisy. Shade giggled a quiet, rustling giggle. It danced with all the moonbeams it could find. It stretched long to touch the shadow of a tall blade of grass. It scrunched up small to hide beside a sleeping beetle.

It learned it could be anything it wanted to be. A pointy star. A round ball. A funny, floppy rabbit with long, long ears. It tiptoed over to the sleepy daisy, its petals all closed up for the night. Shade gently wrapped itself around the base of the stem. It became the daisy's own special nighttime blanket. The daisy sighed a tiny, sleepy, flowery sigh. Everything was so quiet and magical. Then, a soft, puffy cloud drifted in front of the moon. And just like that, the moonbeams vanished.

The world went all grey and dim. And Shade... well, Shade almost vanished too. Without the bright moonlight, there was nothing to make a shadow against. Shade felt very small and very faint. It huddled by the oak tree's root, feeling like a whisper. Where did the magic go? Was it gone forever? But just as a tiny shadow-tear might have formed, the edge of the cloud began to glow. A silver lining. Slowly, oh so slowly, the cloud drifted on its way. And there was the moon again.

Looking down with its calm, kind face. A single moonbeam, then two, then a dozen, came spilling back down to the ground. And Shade was back. Not just back, but BIGGER and DARKER and more wonderful than before. It hadn't disappeared. It was just resting. It learned that sometimes, the light has to go away for a little while. So you can remember how wonderful it is when it returns. It wasn't a sad thing at all. It was just part of the moon's gentle game. The night grew quieter and deeper.

The air grew cooler. The dew began to form on the blades of grass, each one a tiny jewel holding a captured moonbeam. The crickets' song grew slower... and slower... until it was almost a hum. The whole world was getting ready to sleep. Shade felt a happy kind of tired. The dancing was done for tonight. It found a smooth, warm stone that had soaked up the last of the sun's heat. It curled up right beside it, making a perfect, cozy shadow-spoon. The stone was its pillow.

The soft night air was its blanket. The cricket's song was its lullaby. Shade closed its non-existent eyes and drifted into shadow-dreams. And now, it’s your turn, my dear. The moon is watching over you, too. Just like it watched over Ripply, and just like it watched over Shade. You are safe, and you are warm. It’s time to rest your head. It’s time to drift into your own wonderful dreams. Sweet dreams.
