A single dandelion puff can carry over one hundred tiny seeds on the wind. Each one is a brave little adventurer, just like our friend Willow the leaf we met, dancing in the moonlight. Tonight's story is about one of those seeds. Its name was Flicker. Flicker was nestled deep inside a perfect, fluffy white sphere. It was crowded and cozy, with all its brothers and sisters tucked in tight. Together, they sat atop a tall, green stalk, looking out at a world of grass and busy, scurrying beetles.
Flicker could feel the warm sun on its tiny parachute of fluff. It could hear the low buzz of a bumblebee nearby. It waited, feeling the gentle sway of its tall home. Then, a soft sound came closer... a gentle PSSSHHHHH. It was the breath of a kind giant, a little child with bright eyes, making a wish. One big puff… and Flicker was lifted up. Suddenly, it was all alone, tumbling and twirling in the air. The world rushed up to meet it. For a moment, a little flutter of fear tickled its parachute.
Its old home, the dandelion stalk, grew smaller and smaller until it was just a tiny green speck. The wind felt so big, and Flicker felt so very small. Where was it going? What would it find out here in the wide, wide world? It spun in a slow circle, watching the garden turn below. But then... Flicker noticed something. It wasn't falling. It was dancing. The wind wasn't pushing it, it was holding it. The breeze carried it like a gentle hand, lifting it higher.
It floated right over a wooden fence, where a sleepy orange cat stretched out in a warm sunbeam. It soared past a magnificent spiderweb, glistening with morning dew like a thousand tiny diamonds strung together. It saw the very tops of the big oak trees, their leaves waving a soft hello as it passed. This wasn't scary at all. It was the most wonderful feeling. It was a grand, quiet adventure. After a long, lovely float, the wind began to slow its song.
It hummed a lullaby, and Flicker drifted down, down, down. It floated past a bright red ladybug taking a nap on a rose petal. It gently tickled the pointy hat of a stone garden gnome. And then, it landed. Not with a bump, but with a soft little sigh, like settling into the coziest bed. Flicker nestled into a patch of deep green moss, tucked right between two smooth, warm stones. It was safe. It was peaceful. This was its new home. Flicker closed its tiny seed-eyes, its little parachute of fluff now a soft, white blanket.
And there, in the quiet, dark earth, it began to dream. It dreamed of the sunshine it would one day become.
