A single autumn leaf, on a good gust of wind, can travel for miles. It reminds me a little of Flurry’s first flight… how that one-of-a-kind snowflake found its own special path. Well, this is a story about another kind of traveler. His name was Leo. Leo was a small maple leaf, painted in the most wonderful shades of fire-red and sunset-gold. All summer long, he had lived on the highest branch of a great big tree, soaking up the sun and dancing with his brothers and sisters. But now… now the air was crisp. The light was soft. And one by one, his friends had let go, whispering goodbye on the breeze.
Leo was the last one left on his twig. He felt a little scared, but also… a little curious. One afternoon, a gentle little wind came puffing through the branches. It didn't push. It didn't shove. It just… invited. "Ready?" it seemed to hum. And Leo knew he was. He took a deep breath, loosened his tiny stem, and just… let… go. For a second, he tumbled! Down, down, down! But then—WHOOSH! The wind caught him. And he wasn't falling anymore. He was FLYING! Oh, it was wonderful! He soared past the kitchen window of the little blue house, where he could smell cinnamon and apples. He swooped low over the garden, saying a quick hello to a busy little chipmunk gathering nuts.
He saw his own tree from a brand NEW angle, a giant bouquet of color reaching for the sky. He wasn't just a leaf on a tree anymore. He was part of the wind. Part of the sky. He danced with other leaves, red and yellow and brown, all swirling together like a happy parade. They tumbled and twirled, writing stories in the air that only they could read. The world was so much BIGGER than his one little branch. So much more exciting. Then, as the sun began to dip low, the wind grew tired. The big swoops and soaring turns became gentle rocking. A slow, quiet spiral down, down, down.
Leo saw the ground coming closer. Not hard pavement, but a soft, cozy-looking pile of other leaves nestled right against a warm stone wall. It looked like the perfect place for a nap. He landed without a sound. A soft little whisper of a landing. He wiggled down between a big, sturdy oak leaf and a crinkly brown one. It was so quiet here. He could hear the faint rustle of his new friends settling in around him. He was safe. He was warm. He was exactly where he needed to be. The adventure of the sky was over… and the long, peaceful dream of the earth was just beginning.
