Fireflies aren't flies at all… they're actually beetles. Just last night, we were floating high on the wind with Leo the little leaf, watching the world from above. Well tonight, my dear, our adventure is about down here, close to the ground, with a different kind of magic. As the sun tucked itself away, leaving the sky the color of a soft plum, a tiny light blinked on. And then off. And then on again. This was Sparkle. She was a very new firefly, and this was her very first night to truly explore.
The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and sleepy flowers. All day, the garden was full of busy bees and bright colors. But the night… oh, the night was a secret. And Sparkle’s little light was the key. With a brave little flicker, she lifted off her blade of grass. Whee! The world was so BIG. She flew past a sleepy ladybug, who had tucked herself into the velvet folds of a red rose for the night. "Hello," Sparkle pulsed with her light. The ladybug just wiggled a bit in her sleep.
Then, she saw a silvery path shimmering on a stone. At the end of it was a wise old snail, his shell a perfect swirl. He moved so... slowly. He seemed to carry all the time in the world on his back. He saw her light and blinked his long eyestalks, a quiet hello. Sparkle felt a thrill of discovery with every beat of her tiny wings. She was a star, a little wandering star, painting dots of light in the dark. She flew higher, over the tops of the ferns, until she saw something that made her stop in mid-air.
Below her was a perfect, dark circle of glass. The garden pond. And in it… was another firefly, just as bright as she was. She dipped lower, pulsing a friendly greeting. The firefly in the water pulsed right back. Oh! But as she looked closer, she saw it wasn't just her own reflection. Behind her little light in the water was another light. A giant… glowing… silver circle. It was the MOON. The great big moon in the sky was right there, floating in the water with her. She wasn't just a tiny light all alone.
She was a tiny light… with the moon. A deep, happy peace filled her little body. Her wings felt heavy now. She flew to a big, soft fern leaf that curled over like a gentle hand. She landed, and her light pulsed once… twice… getting softer each time. The big garden was quiet. The moon watched over everything. And down on the fern, a tiny, sleeping beetle dreamed of dancing with the moonbeams on the water.
