The largest living thing on Earth is a mushroom, a fungus stretching for miles under the ground. Just like Crystal the snowflake found a whole, wonderful world hiding inside a cloud, tonight we're going to find another secret world, right here on the forest floor. Are you ready, Admin? Let's get cozy and see what we can find. Deep in a quiet forest, under the shade of a giant fern, a tiny mushroom named Miko pushed its way through the soft, damp earth.
Miko was brand new. Its cap was the color of cream and no bigger than a ladybug. The world smelled of rich soil and sweet, decaying leaves. Sunlight dappled through the canopy above, painting shifting patterns on the mossy ground. Miko watched, still and silent, as a fuzzy caterpillar shuffled past, nibbling on a leaf. Everything was so… BIG. A gentle vibration tickled Miko’s stem. Thump… thump… thump. It was a line of busy ants, marching in single file, each one carrying something important.
They didn't seem to notice the tiny new mushroom at all. Miko just watched them go, a silent parade in a silent world. Then, a single drop of morning dew slid from the tip of the fern above. It landed right on Miko’s cap with a soft… plink. The little mushroom shivered. The water drop was cool and heavy, and it sparkled like a tiny jewel in the dim light. Miko felt the weight of it, a small anchor to this big, new place.
As the sun began to set, the forest grew darker and quieter. The warm oranges and pinks faded to deep blues and purples. Miko felt a little bit lonely in the growing dark. But then… something happened. A soft, gentle light began to pulse from a patch of moss nearby. It wasn't the sun. It wasn't a star. It was another mushroom, a cousin Miko hadn't met, glowing with its OWN light. A soft, greenish-blue glow that pulsed like a tiny, sleeping heart.
One… then another… then a whole family of glowing mushrooms lit up the darkness around Miko’s little spot. Miko wasn't alone. Not at all. The whole forest floor was alive with quiet, gentle lights. They weren't bright or loud. They were just… there. A secret, cozy welcome. Miko settled its tiny stem deeper into the cool earth, feeling the soft glow on its cap. The night sounds of the forest — a distant hoot of an owl, the whisper of wind in the pines — became a lullaby.
Miko was just one tiny part of a big, beautiful, sleeping world. And it was the perfect place to be. Sleep now, Admin. The glowing mushrooms are watching over you, too.
