Milo the Moonlit Moth: A Gentle Nighttime Journey

A moth’s wings can beat one thousand times in a single minute. Milo’s wings were just like that, two tiny pieces of moonlight fluttering in the cool night air. He flew through the same quiet sky where we last saw our friend, Puff the littlest cloud, drifting off to sleep among the stars. Milo was a dust-silver moth, and he had just woken up. The world was dark and soft and smelled of damp earth and sweet jasmine flowers. Above him, the moon was a giant, gentle lamp.

And Milo loved the moon more than ANYTHING. Tonight, he decided, he would fly all the way up and say hello. His little wings made a soft, whirring sound only he could hear. Up he went, past the top of the tallest rose bush. Up past the roof of the little garden shed. The air grew cooler. The stars seemed to wink at him. But the moon… the moon didn’t seem any closer at ALL. It was still a big, beautiful pearl, hanging just out of reach. Milo felt a little tired.

His wings were working so very hard. He floated for a moment, resting on the air, wondering if he would ever make it. And that’s when he saw it. Hanging from a long, silken thread was a single, perfect drop of morning dew. It shimmered like a tiny jewel. And held right in the very center of that tiny drop of water… was the moon. The whole, entire, perfect moon, captured just for him. It glowed with a soft, friendly light. Milo fluttered closer.

He could almost touch it with his fuzzy antennae. It wasn't the giant moon in the sky, no. It was a secret moon, a special moon, waiting right here for him to find. He didn't need to fly so far after all. The beauty he was looking for was right here, in the small, quiet corners of the world. A deep, happy feeling filled his tiny moth heart. He had found what he was looking for. He flew gently back down, down, down, past the shed roof, past the rose bush, until he landed on his favorite soft leaf.

He tucked his silver wings in, curled up his feathery antennae, and closed his eyes. The big moon in the sky watched over him, a gentle guardian for all small creatures. And as he drifted into his dreams, Milo smiled, thinking of his own tiny moon, safe inside a drop of dew.
