The very first ray of sunlight takes eight whole minutes to travel from the sun to our world. That first light is what tells sleepy moths, like our friend Milo we heard about last night, that it’s time to find a cozy leaf and go to sleep. It’s also a signal for tiny light-sprites, like Lumi, to get to work. Lumi was no bigger than a firefly, and she zipped through the quiet, grey forest. Her job was to wake things up.
She danced on dewdrops, making them glitter like tiny diamonds. She tickled the noses of sleeping field mice. And she left little trails of soft, golden light wherever her tiny feet landed. Everything was going just right. The world was slowly, quietly getting ready for the day. But then, she found a problem. Down in a patch of moss, there was a little bluebell flower. It was still curled up tight, like a tiny purple fist.
All the other bluebells around it were starting to unfurl, but this one was still fast asleep. Lumi landed gently on its top. “Wake up, sleepyhead,” she whispered. She tapped it with a finger. Nothing. She tickled its side with a feather of light. The bluebell just wiggled a little and let out a tiny, sleepy sigh. It was just TOO cozy to wake up. Lumi knew the sun would be here any second, and this little flower would miss the grand hello.
Lumi sat down on a nearby mushroom and thought. Tapping didn’t work. Tickling didn’t work. What else could she do? Then she remembered a very old, very special kind of magic. It was the magic of sharing. She flew back to the sleepy flower bud. This time, she didn't tap it. She gave it a hug. She wrapped her little light-sprite arms all the way around the curled-up petals. And she began to hum. It wasn't a loud song, just a soft, warm little tune that sounded like sunshine.
As she hummed, she let a tiny piece of her own inner glow, her own spark, seep out of her heart and into the flower. It was a gift of warmth and light. Slowly… so slowly… something happened. The little flower felt the warmth inside its petals. It was like having a tiny, cozy sun wake you up from the INSIDE. It stretched. A single blue petal unfurled. Then another. And another. Soon, the entire bluebell was open, showing its beautiful, golden center.
Just at that moment, the real sun peeked over the hill. Its first big, golden ray landed right on the little bluebell, making it shine. Lumi hovered nearby, her own light a little dimmer, but her heart feeling VERY full. The little flower, now wide awake, swayed gently in the new morning breeze. It was like it was ringing a silent, happy bell, saying thank you to the tiny sprite who helped it see the sunrise.
