Thistle the rabbit twitched her nose at a single, silver thread. It lay across the clover patch, shimmering under the full moon. It didn't look like a spider's silk. It looked solid, woven from light. Curious, she nudged it with a soft paw. The thread held firm. It felt cool and smooth like a river stone, but also warm, like sun-drenched moss. She put her other paw on it. And then, with a tiny, brave hop, she was standing on a path made of pure moonlight. The path lifted her gently from the ground.
First just a little, then higher and higher, as if she were a dandelion seed caught in a soft breeze. Soon, the tops of the tallest fir trees were far below, looking like dark green brushes. The world became so very quiet. The only sound was a soft, humming music that seemed to come from the path itself, a lullaby just for her. Tiny glowing motes of dust danced in the air, smelling faintly of lavender and sleepy chamomile. A sleepy owl, perched on a crescent moon, blinked its big, round eyes.
“Whooo… are… youuu?” it hooted softly. Thistle just wiggled her nose in reply. The owl simply nodded, as if this were the most normal thing in the world. The path curved upward, toward the heart of the night sky. Stars that had always seemed so far away now hung like silver berries on invisible branches. They chimed with a delicate, glassy sound when her long ears brushed against them. She wasn't scared. Not at all. She felt wonderfully calm, as if she were tucked safely in her own bed.
The moonbeam path seemed to know exactly where it was going, and she trusted it completely. And then, after a while, it began to slope gently downward. The humming grew softer. The air began to smell like damp earth and sweet clover again, the familiar scent of home. A warm, yellow light glowed in the distance. It was a lantern, sitting in the window of her own warm, cozy burrow, nestled at the root of the great oak tree. The path was leading her right back home. The silver thread gently lowered her until her paws touched the soft grass at her own front door.
The path behind her dissolved into a thousand tiny sparks, which winked out one by one. Everything was just as she had left it. Except for one small thing. Lying on her welcome-mat of moss was a single, perfect four-leaf clover. It wasn't a normal clover. Each leaf shimmered with the same light as the moonbeam path. A little gift from the journey. Thistle picked it up and carried it inside. She curled up in her soft bed of hay, the little clover glowing on her nightstand, filling the burrow with a peaceful, silvery light.
The world outside was the same as always. But now, Thistle knew it was filled with secret, wonderful paths, waiting for anyone with a curious heart.
